5 of a kind vs. Royal Flush

Last Sunday at my semi-regular card game, my friends and I were playing some stupid, crazy dealer's choice game that had a ton of wild cards and came across a hand where I had 5 Aces(3 aces & 2 wild cards) and one of my friends had a royal flush(K,Q,10, suited & 2 wilds).

I've always been under the impression that when playing a game with wild cards 5 of a kind is the best hand possible and my friend with the royal argued that because 5 of a kind isn't possible in a non-wild game his royal flush was best. There was 3-1 vote between the players out of the hand that 5 of a kind was the winner, but royal flush boy threw a fit for about 20 min. over it and we finally agreed to chop the pot up to move on to another game.

What do you guys think, 5 of a kind or Royal Flush being the better hand?

5 of a kind. Even though the real answer is no wilds.

Re: 5 of a kind vs. Royal Flush

I agree with 5 of a kind wins all, but I stick to real poker with no wilds so its not an issue I have to deal with. That and it soulds like Royal flush boy needs to learn how to be a better loser.

Re: 5 of a kind vs. Royal Flush

5 of a kind is no more than a full house (3 of a kind with 2 wild). I would side to the Royal Flush if he would have made it legit, since he used wild cards too - i would say chopping the pot is fair.

If you are going to use "wild cards" don't use anything more than 1 eyed jacks or something so the game stays under control.

Re: 5 of a kind vs. Royal Flush

I think the pot split was fair due to the fact you both used wild cards. Although had one been natural it would be an easy decision. Like someone said the proper answer is give everyone their money back and re-deal with no wild cards.

Re: 5 of a kind vs. Royal Flush

You can't base the pot on whether or not you use a wild to make your hand. If you have wilds, they count and 5 of a kind should win.

Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving.

5 of a kind is the winner, if for no other reason than it's impossible to get without a wild card.

Re: 5 of a kind vs. Royal Flush

did you state that 5 of a kind is an actual hand before playing? if so then i would say that it is the better hand, but since you cannot get 5 of a kind in a regular poker game but can get a royal flush, i would go with royal flush being the better hand

Re: 5 of a kind vs. Royal Flush

I'm not gonna lie, I try to stick to semi-normal card games, hold 'em, chicago, stud, etc.

I HATE it when other people play games and make up 5 different crazy rules that only the dealer will remember. My brother does that a lot and I usually just tell him to blind me out til it's someone else's deal.

"OK, we're playing baseball where the 3's and 9's are wild and if today is Tuesday and you have both a 3 and a 9 then you split the pot, and if a 5 drops whoever hits the table first gets a free card, and let me think of about 5 other ridiculous rules that will ensure I don't lose any money cause I'm getting my @$$ kicked and need to make up stupid rules so I can play a bit longer." - my brother

Personally I would have said that a 5 of a kind is no more than a 4 of a kind with a kicker that "happens" to be the the same as the rest. For instance, five of a kind would be four aces with an ace kicker, or four twos with a two kicker.
