    Upset Twins Fans

    Here is a good article:
Jim Souhan: Keeping this star wasn't an option

Maybe I only think it is good because it falls in line with my thinking. I am a big Twins fan and have been following all this for months now. Only time will tell but I think the best option might have been taken given the situation. The moral of the story is that is was a bad situation from the beginning. Next step in my opinion is to trade Nathan and maybe one of the young pitching prospects for more young help.

I just hope the OF they picked up pans out. I know that Torii was more of an offensive than defensive weapon but the outfield will miss him

Yeah Hunter is one of the better defensive center fielders in the league in my opinion but age is starting to take its toll I think. I think the signing of Delmon Young fills the hole in the order left by Hunter. What they really need is run scorers in the top of the order because they have guys to drive them in in M & M, Cuddy, Young, Kubel, ect.

Hunters an interesting case when his defense was outstanding from about 1999-2005 his offensive production left something to be desired, as he's taken a step back(still an excellent defensive centerfielder just not the top his offensive production had really been kicked up a notch

    Re: Upset Twins Fans

Everything I have read about this trade makes me shake my head. They get good prospects from the Mets, but they didn't get Pelfrey or Fernando Martinez. Now of course the deals in the paper are largely speculation, but this seems to be the weakest of all the deals.

Now my irritation comes from being a Braves fan.

I don't think Hunter will be missed as much as everyone thinks. Scouts say Gomez is a pretty good CF. He has speed and a strong arm. If he can just hit about .275 and use his speed on the bases this could be the best offense the Twins have had in a very long time. I think Young will come close to Hunters offensive output of last year. If Mauer can stay healthy he should be a .330 15-20HR and 90+RBI kind of guy. Then if Cuddyer and Morneau just do their thing along with Kubel playing how he ended the year the Twins could have a top 5 offense. Then again this all looks good on paper.

    Re: Upset Twins Fans

The Twins screwed themselves. Terry Ryan will be sorely missed. His only blunder was David Ortiz. Granted, I'm not sure any deal would have satisfied every Twins fan, but he took the worst one available.

    Re: Upset Twins Fans

I too am a bit sceptical about the deal. I do like the fact that Santana won't be pitching for the yanks or the sox, but I do think at least in speculation we could have got prospects that would help us right now. With just signing cuddy and morneau to big deals it appeared the twins were going to take a shot at winning now, but this deal almost makes it look like a project. However I think a year or two down the road some of the mets prospects could be big for us.

I'm a Mets fan, and I really like Gomez. He has blazing speed, and could really be a threat on the basepaths. His bat is a little suspect, but he's young and with good coaching could get a bunch of infield singles, which could pretty much be doubles if he steals as much as I think he can. He can also cover a lot of ground in CF. I don't think he will ever hit for power, though.

Baseball is so messed up these days. Do I cheer for a team or players that leave every year? I'm not going to judge the Twins and will wait and see if anything pans out.

And his terrible free agent signings on pretty much a yearly basis, even after the Twins had improved washed up scrub pitchers and hitters were still being given shots above young talent. Bill Smith has already proven to be more adept here by signing the likes of Mike Lamb. The Twins got stuck in a hard place here with them not getting any "wow" offers and then holding out and then Santana forced their hand by saying now or never. A lot of the other offers were back in December(we can't be certain they were still on the table) and had the Twins taken a trade without trying to get the most bang for their buck I'm sure people would be saying they got fleeced in that regard as well.

I think Twins fans should have been upset. Ellsbury, Hughes, or Lester were all major league ready talent they could have got plus a decent prospect or 2 with them.

    Re: Upset Twins Fans

I just don't understand the rationale behind this move at this time. Smith should have balked immediately at what the Mets were offering. His only option should be to hold onto Santana until Spring Training or beyond. Someone in the Yankees or Red Sox rotation is going to get hurt. The opportunity would have come along. I just don't feel like this situation was one where a deal had to be swung now. But, I'll be the first one to say that if the average (according to most experts) prospects pan out, then I will eat crow.
