    Dunking the Ball

In the post game thread there is talk about missing close shots. I am no basketball expert so help me out here. Why when a player can touch the backboard or rim do they lay it up. This happens to Jiri a lot, he is right there close and lays it in, or tries to, why not dunk it? Craig is the sameway at times, but it seems a lot of his shots have him falling away from the basket. We know they both can dunk with ease why not dunk for the sure points when given the chance?

It takes energy and they only have so much of it. Also it's rare that they are open enough to dunk and you can hurt yourself dunking over a guy.

I think it has a lot to do with the big bodies put in between them and the basket. I agree that Brackins falls away too much, but when he gets stronger, he will be more punishing a force.

That fast break dunk Brackins had after the block by Jiri on the other end is a glimpse of the dunking ability he has. We will be seeing that more and more as he matures and his confidence grows!

    Re: Dunking the Ball

I think there are times they could throw it through but alot of times our guys try to avoid the contact rather then attack the rim... I actually kinda thought the same thing after watching the Ames v. Lincoln game and seeing a much smaller guy, Ross dunking at will no matter who was in his way...

I loved how he hung there for a few seconds, just to savor it.

    Re: Dunking the Ball

For post players, dunking also has to do with having the mindset to just want to dominate and physically punish your opponent. Fizer and Cato were like that. I think Brackins could be like that. I don't think JH will be that kind of player at ISU.

If your post guys would rather float out to the perimeter and hoist up a three, then they probably aren't going to be the type who are going to take it in the middle and jam it down the opponents throat.

Jiri reminds alot of Dirk Nowitzki. When DN came to the Mavs, he wouldn't go inside much, and when he did, he tried little finesse shots that were not particularly effective. About 3 or 4 years ago, the coaching staff convinced him that he needed to start working inside and finishing with strong moves, because defenses were starting to take away his perimeter game. DN goes inside now, and it has made him a much better player.

    Re: Dunking the Ball

I had the perfect vantage point for that dunk. Brackins struggled from the floor tonight, but he definitely made that the turning point in the game. I knew there was no looking back after that.

    Re: Dunking the Ball

I recall when Homan played always yelling at the screen "why didn't you dunk it!" when he would do a little lay up and miss.

I like the amount of dunks I've seen this season. Aside from the KU and KSU games, we've had a fair amount.

    Re: Dunking the Ball

If you're going to dunk it make sure you make it... I'd rather have the layup most of the time.
