We exchanged tanks when I was growing up - had many problems with them. One was actually leaking - found out half-way home. We finally began filling it ourselves using the large propane tank we had on the farm.
I also read a story years back of a man that was severely burned from a tank that was leaking and either caught fire or exploded - it was a tank he had exchanged for the day before.
Granted, the chances are slim but I at least know the condition of my tank.
