    New puppy this Sunday!

Things have changed and we are now getting the Westie on Sunday instead of Next Friday, how exciting! Last night we had to go out and but the essentials: kennel, treats, toys, dish. Now we are set, this is going to be the longest week EVER!

If you'd like to enjoy the dog after the puppy stage I highly recommend reading up using a breed specific book. I used the ISU library to find some info when we got our Australian Shepherd pup, saved a lot of headaches... But there's others that things that the book didn't cover, like how to keep the damn dog from ******** on the lawn!!

A word of advice with puppies- make sure to have a good chew toy or chewy treats for it until it grows out of the chewing stage. The raw hide pigs ears worked well when our lab was a pup. It also chewed up several remotes and a cell phone in the process.

I was just going to say to hide the remotes and the cells. I got my dachshund some rawhide bones after he wiped out 2 remotes and gave my cell a good mangling. Seriously consider crate training for the lil pup also. I was dead-set against it but after getting shoes, sofa legs, dvd boxes, and all manner of things destroyed, I tried it and my dog is much less neurotic when I get home. Dogs are den animals and they prefer the "cave" environment of the kennel. It made housebreaking a breeze because they will resist soiling their "den". When I would come home, he was ready to let it all out and we could hustle right out the door. After I got done praising him like he had just cured cancer for peeing on the grass, the accidents in the house almost disappeared.

Re: New puppy next Friday :)

Congrats! If it is really young, be prepared to wake up in the middle of the night and take it out for a while. Little bladders are not fun. :(

But, the cuteness and unconditional love make up for it. Our puppy is doing really well in the potty department. You as the owner just need to be repetitive and responsible. Puppies don't automatically know where to go. :)

If Jeff Dunham is to be believed, if your dog does its business in the carpet, stick his/her nose in it. After 2-3 times it gets the hint...

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

Re: New puppy next Friday :)

I was raised with 3 Westies, and my parents have one currently. They are a big part of my formative years. Call me sentimental but I think anyone would be hard pressed to find a better breed of dog.

I am interested in where you found your puppy, and more particularly how much you paid.

No, more along the lines of Romulus and Remus. I was abandoned at an early age by my parents outside of a Scotch distillery in the Highlands of Scotland and was suckled by a Westie *****. My brother Cesar now adorns cans of high-priced dog food.
