    Offense not getting enough possessions

Maybe this point has already been stated, but...

Doesn't it seem like the ISU offense is not getting very many possessions due to the new clock rules and the fact that defense allows long, clock burning drives by the opposition. I think we only had the ball 3 or 4 possessions in the 1st half.

Since the clock rule isn't going away we need to adjust to that, and the defense needs to start making some quick stops or turnovers. Not to mention that the offense needs to take advantage of the times when we do have the ball.

Re: Offense not getting enough possessions

The D needs to make plays. They have not done that this year.... imo, we start doing that and the O can take their long sustaining drives and turn them into quick hits. Because, i believe we have to use long sustaining drives to let our D rest... but we make plays and stops, we can afford to take chances on big plays on O.

But I don't care for the clock rules... each team had the ball 3 times in the first half (3rd for UNI was to run out the clock). IMO, if the NCAA is to keep this format, i nclude 2 minute warnings for both the 2nd and 4th quarters.

    - keep.

Re: Offense not getting enough possessions

I agree that the clock rules are bad and that the inability of our defense to get 3 and outs is a problem, but the manner in which we are running our offense is also a major problem.

If you watch in-between plays, there is no pace (or a very slow pace) to our offense - Meyer walks to the sideline, walks to the huddle, we get in our formation, and with absolutely no shifts or motion, we snap the ball with less than 5 seconds on the play clock. That leads to less opportunities for our offense because we are not creating additional plays. In my mind, this goes to coaching with the new rules. At least 1 or 2 times per game, we should go into a hurry-up offense, not only in the last 2 minutes. It seems to me our offense actually does better in this format when they are creating a better tempo. This also creates the benefit of not allowing the defenses to have all the extra time to substitute relative to our packages and, because we have no motion and very little misdirection in our offense, the defenses won't have ample time to just sit and look at our formation thereby reading our plays before they are even run. The final positive, it would keep teams off-balance because we haven't done it at all this year. This won't cure everything, but it would be something.

Re: Offense not getting enough possessions

I full heartedly agree with what you guys are saying here. Even though our defense has not given up a ton of points, people are overlooking the fact that its impossible to score if you don't have the ball. I expect all the rest of these games to be nailbiters due to the reasons stated above.

I wonder how the new clock rules are affecting the average number of possessions nationwide......and who did they poll that said they needed to shorten the games. Certainly wasn't me......I know not everyone tailgates, but when your there all day anywase, who cares about an extra 15 minutes??

Re: Offense not getting enough possessions

I think Keep already mentioned this, but I think the offense is being strategically slowed down to let the D rest, but I agree that this uneven/choppy pace that O runs at (strategic or not) is holding back their potential explosiveness.

Re: Offense not getting enough possessions

Are you referring to the Pistol Offense that Nevada runs so beautifully? I don't think we have the talent/speed in the backfield that Nevada has.
