    Winter Drivers

So this morning apparently there were quite a few accidents on the interstates/Highways in cedar rapids.

Cedar Rapids police: SLOW DOWN | GazetteOnline.com - Cedar Rapids, Iowa City

According to that the interstate through Cedar Rapids is closed both North and South Bound for quite a distance. As well as highway 30 east bound.

I would of not thought the roads would of been bad this morning but guess they are. It is kinda said that motorists don't know how to tell.

people are idiots. If they haven't learn by now to slow down when it's snowy out, they'll never learn.

If people drive to the conditions, it's easy. Winter doesn't scare me, its the other drivers.

Exactly, I have no problem at all driving on ice or in snow, but the other drivers out there scare the crap out of me.

This is the same thing that I say when winter weather rolls in and I have to drive the bus around. Particularly with buses they handle pretty well, but even driving my car around, I am more worried about everyone else then me.

    Re: Winter Drivers

I drove from DSM to Ames Tuesday morning and counted 26 cars in the ditch on I35. The left lane looked like a glazed donut but cars were still whipping by me at 75+. The sweet justice was when a dude in an Scion tailgated me south of Ankeny, dancing around trying to change lanes. When he went past me he flipped me off and call me something that seemed to rhyme with "Mortar Trucker". Yep, you guessed it. He was in the median just north of the rest stop by Ankeny. Slow down folks.

here we go again. hopefully this discussion doesn't end up with some posters cheerfully hoping to see others in the ditch.

Did you get a chance to wave at him when you went by?

    Re: Winter Drivers

The 10 car accident on Highway 30 near ADM might be due to the steam being released. It was pretty foggy this morning in that area.

I came through that area on 380 this morning and the roads were bone dry so I don't know what the problem is... there was no ice.

    Re: Winter Drivers

That is what I was thinking, I have not seen 380 or 30 this morning yet, but I would of figured there would not of been any ice on them.

Which is probably the same thing all these people in accidents are thinking too.

Especially if its winter and the driver has a case of DWA

    Re: Winter Drivers

I am very careful about how I drive on snowy roads, especially since my car has performance (not all-season) tires on it. When I'm at speed it's not really a big deal, but trying to accelerate from a stop uphill or turning onto roads can be adventurous...

    Re: Winter Drivers

I'll admit, I still can't drive in this crap. Since I moved here i for college I have been in three accidents because of ice and totaled my Mustang Things have gotten better since I have been driving 4x4's the last couple of winters but I still hate it. I try and stay off the major highways just for my own sanity. I think I just need to move south or to a bigger city with better public transportation.

    Re: Winter Drivers

If you're in Polk or Story County in bad weather and come upon a slow moving gold Mercury Sable just be careful when passing...I can't control that car for the life of me. It's by far the worst car I've ever driven with in bad weather. I have new tires and everything on it.

I've driven truck through and around ADM, when the steam is getting released it can get pretty hectic, not hard to imagine that it could cause an accident in that area.
