The refs are out to get KU

Their student newspaper had an article today with the title and subheading:
Questionable referee calls hinder Kansas’ chance for a fair game

Kansas hopes that tonight’s game against Iowa is not affected by disputable referee calls

First, it's Iowa State, not Iowa. Second, are you kidding me? This is the place where you can shoot a three between free throws and YOU'RE worried about a fair game?

Here are the opening two paragraphs:
Referee Ed Hightower drew lots of cheers and a few laughs from the Missouri crowd Saturday night after exaggerating hand symbols for several foul calls he made. It’s unlikely the Jayhawk players were laughing, though; referees have caused them trouble all season.

If Kansas loses tonight against Iowa State at 7 p.m. or anytime this season, the Jayhawks might look to the referees as the biggest reason for the loss and not the opponent. Kansas has struggled in tightly officiated games this year. The team’s four closest victories, against Southern California, Georgia Tech, Arizona and Missouri, have been foul-filled, grind-it-out battles.
Questionable referee calls hinder Kansas’ chance for a fair game : The University Daily Kansan

This is what I have to deal with living in Lawrence. KU fans are passionate and support their team like crazy but they're not always grounded in reality.

Also, they have a full two-page poster in the paper that says "Kansas Basketball 110 years of Excellence, Iowa State 100 years of mediocrity." Typical witty work. Last year it was some lame pun about Cyclones sucking or blowing or something.

I wonder how fast they would be having a hissy fit, if one of the local papers here referred to them as Kansas State instead of Kansas? Seriously it is not like Iowa State and Iowa are in the same conference even, like the jayhawks and wildcats are.

    They're way ahead of you.
Still, the Jayhawks appear to be vulnerable in games where the officials have a quick whistle. It’s impossible to tell how the referees will officiate tonight’s game, but Iowa State has an imposing starting lineup with four players taller than 6-foot-6. They’ll likely play a physical style, and if the referees don’t want to allow that kind of rough play, they could whistle plenty of fouls.

So... before the game even begins, and before they lose, they blame it on the refs?

I am sure if we lose tonight it will be because of the refs too.

I always like Tim Floyd's tactic of unintentionally intentionally fouling the other team's worst free throw shooter during the game...just to change the pace a bit. I thought it was smart basketball when timed right.

Were you saying that after the ISU-MSU game in the tournament a few years back? The ISU-Alabama bowl game?

While they are a part of the game, it's not easy to let the obvious ones go.

I think what KU is doing is a bit nutty...but that goes without saying.

Re: The refs are out to get KU

And it's not at all possible that Kansas gets whistled for fouls because they are committing fouls? That would never occur to them, would it? No. Kansas is perfect. Everybody else sucks. The world is out to get Kansas. Somebody else must be at fault if Kansas gets called for a foul.

I'd expect this kind of trash from a Big 10 paper. Sounds just like the excuses that pour out of Iowa City. I really hope the individual who wrote that article, and the editor(s) who allowed it to print, have no serious aspirations of a career in journalism some day.

At least they already have their excuse lined up for when they lose a game. It would be a shame if they had to think of one after the loss.

Re: The refs are out to get KU

Seriously, how can the best team in the county (arguably) have an article about how they get screwed by refs WHEN THEY HAVEN'T LOST A GAME? The average 25 point wins and they are upset about the reffing that has taken place.

    Wow.

What a bunch of whiners! ( or at least the hack who wrote this.)

Here's a good drinking game for tonight -- take a shot every time KU fans boo when a foul is committed against one of their players.
