    ISU women face uphill battle

    QC Times LINK

Nicky Wieben and Toccara Ross stood under the basket in street clothes Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum, watching, near tears, as their Iowa State teammates warmed up for a game against Nebraska.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this for Wieben and Ross, two of the team’s leading scorers whose seasons were ended by knee injuries.

It definitely wasn’t supposed to be like this for the Cyclones, who had reasonable expectations for a strong Big 12 season and deep NCAA Tournament run. With Des Moines’ Wells Fargo Arena hosting first- and second-round games in March, the team was guaranteed a spot in that cluster if they earned a tournament berth.

Now, forget the NCAA Tournament. It will be a struggle to win games, period, in a deep and talented Big 12 Conference.

“It’s hard for everyone. It’s most difficult for Nicky and for T,” Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly said. “The first thing you tell the team is there is nothing we can do about it. We can’t make excuses. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves.”

    It’s hard not to.

With Wieben and Ross in the lineup, Iowa State got off to an 8-1 start before losing Ross, a Davenport Central grad, Dec. 21 in a loss at Minnesota. They’re 4-4 since, including Saturday’s home loss to Nebraska, their first game without Wieben, the team’s second-leading scorer and the school’s all-time leader in blocks.

Between the two, they averaged more than 18 points and 9 rebounds a game.

“You don’t lose two good players and not feel the effect,” Fennelly said. “The other players have to find a way to make up the difference, and we have to put them in a position to do that.”

Saturday, that meant playing five players almost the entire game and using a 2-3 zone defense to combat fatigue and foul trouble.

The Cyclones gave an inspired effort in the 82-72 loss, getting 20 points from freshman Kelsey Bolte and 19 from junior Heather Ezell.

“It’s hard because everyone always says if you work hard, good things will happen,” Fennelly said. “Well, this is a situation where that might not happen. It might, but it might not.

“So, at what point do they quit believing, at what point do you get frustrated?”

Ross, a 5-11 senior, already had surgery to repair her right ACL. Because she played in less than 30 percent of ISU’s games, she is eligible for a medical redshirt and will have another year to play.

Wieben, a junior, is not eligible for a medical redshirt. She is scheduled for surgery Thursday to repair the ACL in her left knee.

Good luck to Nicky with her surgery. Here's to a quick recovery.

It would be nice to have both of those girls back next year, and healthy.

Hopefully Nicky comes back at full health and the powers that be at the NCAA give Toccara her med red shirt then next season's squad will one heck of a team. Ezell will be a senior, Lacey will have a full year under belt at point, Bolte is already showing signs of greatness plus due to being shorthanded this season, the bench players will have quite a bit of experience coming into next season. Next year could be special.

But first we have to ride the roller coaster that this season is turning out to be.

I thought it was a done deal for Tocarra getting her medical redshirt?
Is this still to be decided?

Re: ISU women face uphill battle

its such a tough break for this team.. i was really hoping they would do great things THIS year...

OK so who was it that told the team to go out and break a leg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(k that wasnt really that funny..tried to brighten the mood..)

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

All medical hardship requests are done after the season. It should just be a formality (since she fulfills all the requirements), but it won't be official until sometime after the season is done.

One would hope that it would be a formality, but for some reason I just don't trust the NCAA with anything involving ISU.
