    OT: Dogs (Not Drake)

So, Ripvdub and I have a 3 year old Spaniel/Terrier mix named Jack Trice that we rescued from the ARL in 2005. He is the best dog and our vet always tells us how lucky we were to get a good rescue dog.

I want to get him a brother. Leaning toward a Miniature Schnauzer, but open to suggestions. We have rescued all of our other dogs, but I think this time we might go with a specific breed.

I would like the dog to stay below 20 pounds as that is the size of Jack. Also, a dog that is easily trained and that gets along with other animals and children.

What kind of dog do you have and do you have any suggestions?

He might be for sale, but doesn't meet the weight or training requirements! ;)

I'm sure he was trained easily but I don't know, we got him when he was 5.

I taught him how to shake hands when he was 8, I thought that was amazing, usually after dogs get so old you can't teach them any thing new.

    Re: OT: Dogs (Not Drake)

I had a Miniature Schnauzer growing up. They get along good with children. They can bark a lot. They do not shed, so you will have to trim them. A problem with them is they have some hereditary health issues (Kidney stones, bladder stones, and a few others) that can wind up being big $ to fix later on.

After having one already, I don't think I would get another, but I am a big dog person anyway.

Do you have a dog now? We also looked at weenie dogs, chiuahuas, min pins and a cross min schnauzer/chinese crested that were mistakes.

Our neighbors had to get rid of their beagle when they had a new baby. He started biting and etc. So, we haven't been looking at a beagle.... Might have to do some looking.

    Re: OT: Dogs (Not Drake)

Our dauchshund gets along great with her brother and loves to be with us more than any dog I've seen. However, she doesn't like our friend's 5 year old daughter at all (only kid she's been near), but will act the same way towards adults (parents and in-laws). She doesn't like new people in here territory, she doesn't like people standing and staring at her. But she's as sweet as pie when it's just the two of us.

You probably shouldn't even think about a dauchshund if you're wanting something that's easy to train. They are stubborn beyond belief and while they're smart enough to learn tricks/be potty trained they tend to not want to learn it and take a long time to become the dog you want. Luckily, our dog was a rescue, and she was about a year and a half when she came to our house. Fully potty trained, once you learn her signals, and one of the sweetest dogs in the world.

I a couple houses down from me they have about a 1 year old beagle. One of these days he will need rescuing. because they let that dog go any where. Though he usually roams next to the fence in my yard and plays with my shorthair.

If the weight restriction goes out the window, I would recommend a german shorthair, great people dog very affectionate.

    Re: OT: Dogs (Not Drake)

Cairn Terriers are good dogs. They can be hard to find. They look like Toto in Wizard of Oz.

We used to have a Cairn. We had to put her down in May

We also have a Yorkie/Silky Terrier mix. He's a good dog, but getting a bit particular in his old age. He doesn't really play with the kids. He's pretty much indifferent to them.

Anyways, both are smallish dogs. Usually around the 15 lbs, sometime up to 20 lb. Probably the same energy level as your other terrier.

Here are pics of the pups we are going to look at. They are min schnauzers. I asked if we could take Jack with us to see them. Haven't heard back yet.
