    Xbox Live Account STOLEN

I am not a very happy person right now, and I just wanted to post on here to see if anyone had any good ideas.

My xbox live account was hacked into tonight.. that person then changed my password and now I cannot log into it.

While this may not seem like a big deal.. it really is. My account was linked to my personal email address so that person got access to my email as well.. Now I can't check my email or anything.

I called the credit card company and got my accounts disabled and they're giving me a new card in the mail. I also changed my passwords and email addresses for online shopping sites.

    Is there anything I'm forgetting?

Is there any way I can get my Windows Live account back from this person??

I'm calling Xbox in a few hours to let them know what happend as well. I really hope I can get my stuff back!!

    thanks for listening.. BEAT KANSAS

I've heard of this happening before. Was your account linked to windows Live ID (Passport)?

    Re: Xbox Live Account STOLEN

    It does suck

My Ebay account was hacked about a month ago. Ebay was all over it - that's how I found out. They had me do a few safeguards regarding email and assured me my paypal account was secure. All the hackers appeared to do was sent out a bunch of Ebay messages pointing people at other sites/stores.

My suggestion is for people to have multiple emails. One you care about, one that you can afford to lose (or deal with the garbage you might get)

    Or:

    1. use very good passwords - 12 characters with caps, numbers and punctuation.
    2. don't browse in the dark corners of the Internet
    3. only open mail you know who sent it
    4. don't use unsecured networks

Those 4 things will keep 99.99999999999 of the problems away.

I use ebay alot, so I'm curious how they hacked your account. Did someone just guess your password, or was it phishing? I got suckered by a fake ebay site several years ago when phishing was relatively new. Fortunately, no damage was done.

Good list. I would add NEVER open email attachments. Even if they are from your mother. If mom wants to send pictures to you have her open a Flikr account.

I really don't know. My password was/is moderately complex, alpha and numeric. I don't ever, ever, ever send stuff via email or those "we need to validate" your info requests.

Frankly, it had me a little spooked. Nothing has happened since.

I have to wonder if it wasn't my account that got hacked as much as it was Ebay who got hacked. No way to know.

I wouldn't doubt that it was ebay that got hacked. A couple of years ago, ebay had an issue where literally hundreds of accounts got hacked. The hackers were "selling" plasma TVs (Sony, Akai, and others) that normally sold for $2000 for $500, but you had to call the phone number in the auction to get the price. As soon as ebay would get the fraudulent auctions shut down, these guys would just put up more auctions. It went on for several weeks.

The hackers were either brazen or stupid. They kept putting up the identical auction (bad english and all) that stuck out like a sore thumb for various reasons, but just under different ebay accounts names.

I used to use the same (rather long and complicated) password for many things, but I've since made sure that my banking passwords are quite different than my ebay password.

    Re: Xbox Live Account STOLEN

My ebay acount was hacked a few months ago too. The hackers bought 5 laptops and 3 or 4 iphones. Ebay actually notified me and the sellers about the illegal activity and stopped all the possible transactions for me. I guess they were hoping that my paypal account had the same password or something. When I think back about it..I could have easily been out a chunk of change if things didnt go my way.

Now I don't know if I want to get an XBOX live account. Are the ones that get stolen uually recovered and given back to gamers? Are the people who stole them prosecuted?

    Re: Xbox Live Account STOLEN

I got mine back today.. Microsoft was very understanding and everything is good now... they found out who the person was and they said they would take action on the person involved.

I'm a much more happy man tonight than I was last night.
