    Interesting new gadget

I don't have a need for it but it looks pretty cool for those that do:

Saw that in a magazine a couple of weeks ago. Pretty slick stuff.

    Re: Interesting new gadget

Interesting, and easy, but I wonder what the max write/read speed is. I would guess a regular USB card reader would be faster. And I love the "no messing with cables or cradles." Thank goodness! I never could figure out that whole cradle mechanism!

I guess I just can't accept that I would be this lazy. Then again, I don't mind cables.

    Re: Interesting new gadget

I thought it was cool at first but after reading about it I'm not as impressed.

I may have read it wrong but it sounds like you must use your own internet connection to make it work. What I'd like to see is the ability for it to pick up any wi-fi signal and then export the pictures to my online folder. This would be good for travel.

I think it can do either/or.

Pretty neat gadget. As far as transfer rates go, who cares if it's slow? It can start transferring as soon as you bring the camera within range of the wireless network. Go to the fridge, get a beer, watch a show or two and when you get around to it, all your pictures will be there. If that's not fast enough, you can always pull the card out and stick it in a card reader.

I think it can do that, and if it can, I am totally getting one, that is a simple and perfect idea.

    From engadget

The Eye-Fi only connects to trusted, encrypted, pre-configured networks, and doesn't have any means of tunneling back to your home computer. That means you can't just grab a seat at your local Starbucks and have the the card to dump the day's photos to Flickr or your home RAID array.

It sounds like you have to install software on your PC to make it work. I think it's impressive that it's so small but I guess it is more for someone that takes a ton of pictures in their house or something.

    Re: Interesting new gadget

From what I can decipher you have to set up your home network to have the card recognize it and transfer info. The part where it will store the files online if your computer is off at the moment is nice, but doesn't help when you're away. I think the digital point and shoots with built in Bluetooth are much more useful in this respect, because you can use it with any device that is bluetooth capable, and it still requires no wires. Still wondering if that setup can be used to send to a phone or PDA or like device instead of just a computer, but on the whole its much more adaptable than this.

Also, I meant the quickest speed a camera can write to it, not it writing to a computer. Probably won't be significantly diminished, but still curious.
