    Thompson the Terror

He was a demon today! I thought the player of game. Huge rebounds and blocks and fanatical play.

Thompson was outstanding and probably was co-player of the game with Wes. He probably saved 5-6 easy shots at the hoop with his D, hustled for a couple of loose balls, and made a heady timeout call during a loose ball scramble at a critical juncture of the game.

    "Thompson the Terrific" yesterday.

Yeah, right. Thompson was out played by Clark, Brackins and Jiri. Just because he finally plays and doesn't look totally lost, everyone thinks he played great. Reality is he played like he should have all year and he still gets burned on D and doesn't score.

    Greg McDermott disagrees with you.

He singled out AT after the game for his effort, and chose him to represent the players at the postgame press conference.

    Re: Thompson the Terror

I was going to call him the "unsung hero" of the game, but then a lot of people on here were already talking about his play. The defense he played on Dove in the first half was instrumental in keeping us in the game. They were isolating Brackins and he wasn't up to the challenge early on. His block on the layup lead to a big 5 point swing (even though it was probably goal tending). Overall he played very well. I for one was ready to write him off as a lost cause after seeing him a couple of times in practice. I would say Wes was player of the game. But it's going to take more than Wes scoring to be successful in the Big 12. It is going to take efforts like Thompson had today. Hopefully his play today will continue and this wasn't a flash in the pan performance.

    Re: Thompson the Terror

His play should rate him coplayer of the game for no other reason than he showed us and himself that he belongs on the team. I really feel that was his main problem. Some have called him a head case. I would not go that far but a year with SteveO would make anyone a head case. I give him credit that he seems to be well on his way to recovery. Great game Alex!

    Re: Thompson the Terror

Folks...I don't want to keep harping on this - but ChadM and I were in the locker room after the game. AT got a ton of praise and was one of 2 guys that were taken to the postgame presser because of their great play (the other was Clark).

AT's defense was key in winning that game, especially a late blocked shot when OSU was making a run.

    Re: Thompson the Terror

Hopefully this is a sign of improved confidence by Alex. We all know he has ability, he just has performance anxiety. Today he looked incredibly sure of himself. We all know (or should realize) what a huge part of sports is mental, and it would be huge for our season if Alex can get more comfortable out there. We were getting destroyed by the dribble drives and the iso's by Dove, but Alex started erasing some of those chances by OSU. Big, big game by Alex and I hope it shows what he is capable of on a consistent basis rather than being a once in a lifetime game.

    Re: Thompson the Terror

Thompson was a maniac and the plays he made directly affected the outcome of the game. You cannot underestimate the power of a big block or an out-hussle type play on the psyche of both teams on the floor. He had me out of my chair scaring the heck out of my family a couple of times yesterday hooting and hollering at the tube.

    Re: Thompson the Terror

Alex may not score much be he has become our best post defender I think. He looks a lot less "robotic" than he did to start the season and his defense was huge yesterday. I'm hoping that eventually he adds a little offense to his game as well but there were times in the game I would rather have him in just for the defense over Jiri or Brackins. Even if it was not his player he had some great help defense coming over to block the path to the hoop.

    Re: Thompson the Terror

It would be nice if Alex would score more points, but great defense and rebounding compensates for that. Dennis Rodman made a living doing that his whole career in the NBA.

I though the time out that Alex had at the end of the game when we were scrambling with OSU for the ball was one of the smartest things I've seen a player do in a long time. Man how quick witted was he to do that? I think Alex is one of the best defensive players on the team other then Rashan Clark who is king.
