    Cloverfield

Has anyone seen this movie yet? From the time I saw the preview at Transformers I thought it was going to be an awesome movie, but now I am scared it will not be that good.

Let me see some reviews, just no spoilers!

    Re: Cloverfield

Talked to someone who went to the early showing at Michigan State. She said that it was ok, but not worth all the hype. She said that there wasn't much closure to the storyline.

    Re: Cloverfield

from what i have heard, it is filmed in a Blair Witch type first person. I really wanted to go, but not sure i am in the mood for the whole shakey camera thing.

One of the morning radio show personalities down here (who is a sci-fi buff) saw an early-showing, and she was drooling all over it yesterday morning.

    Re: Cloverfield

Hope to see it sometime this weekend. I've been hyped for this movie ever since the Transformers trailer, and most of the reviews have been positive. If you're willing to suspend your disbelief for a couple of hours, you're bound to enjoy it.

    Re: Cloverfield

I haven't seen it but here are some things I've heard:

Is is shot from 1st person perspective like Blair Witch. I can't handle that in a theater. Maybe on DVD with lots of breaks.

Also, while it is known to be a Monster movie, it isn't a movie about the monster. It is a movie about how a group of friends react to the monster attack on their city.

    Re: Cloverfield

Just got back from the showing. Aside from the gigantic group of junior high kids that came strolling into the theater (and would NOT shut UP during movie!! )... it was an amazing experience. It's just simply not the same movie if you wait for this one to come on DVD.

What makes it so effective is the first person view of everything going on. You simply wouldn't feel the same way watching the movie if it were your standard Hollywood fare with a fixed camera. It's the first movie I've sat through trembling and sick to my stomach -- not because the motion was getting to me, but because I allowed myself to get sucked in and make myself feel like I'm actually there running for my life.

The movie was actually a bit funnier than I expected -- most of it coming from the guy holding the camera trying to break the tension and makes several clever quips out of nerves. It was nice to see that rather than the only dialogue being "Oh my God! What was that!? Run away! Did we escape? AHH MY FACE".

That said, there were some truly terrifying moments (and none of them I can give away without spoiling something). I was worried you'd only see the monster once, but you really do get some good glimpses of it throughout the movie... and it's nothing like Godzilla. Kind of hard to describe it, you'll just have to see it for yourself.

I was also surprised at how short the run time was. (I went to the 7:10 showing, and we were out by 8:40, and that's including the seven-something trailers before the movie.) This is a good thing, because just when you're feeling like the movie has run it course, it comes to an end, even if it is a bit abrupt. Hopefully when this one comes out on DVD, there's some extras that include news reports that explore a bit of what the creature was, where it came from, etc.

So, to sum it up... see this film!

    Re: Cloverfield

I just got back. It was... interesting. I am not really sure how to explain what the heck the monster was. I would have liked to know more about the monster but I think the movie was more of an experience than it was a movie. It was pretty short but I felt it was the right length because i was getting a little sick from all of the motion. The experience of it in the theater would be totally different than if you were at home watching it on a tv. You just wouldn't get the "true effect" without being surrounded by it. The theater I went to had such a loud sound system that when the monster came around the ground shook.
