    Accountant referral?

There comes a time in everyone's life where your parents stop doing your taxes for you and you have to step up to the plate and take care of things for yourself. That time for me... is right now. Can anyone refer me to a good accountant in Ames? I will probably do my taxes in the future, but feel a little uncomfortable about it initially. Thanks in advance.

    Re: Accountant referral?

I don't know of one in Ames but I have one I've been using in Perry for awhile now and he's probably cheaper than H&R Block. I don't know what it is but everyone that I know that has used H&R Block think they are a rip off and were not happy with them. Think its a combination of their price and some of the temp people they hire just aren't that good.

My first year out of college I used H&R Block and I think I had to spend more to get my taxes done there than I actually made that year.

I think you can get them done for free at the Ames Public Library. They do a good job as long as you don't have anything really complicated.

I took my taxes to H&R one year and there was a guy working there I know who had been busted for meth. Yeah, I want him seeing my financial info. Been doing my own ever since.

Unless you have a lot of investments or real estate income and things like that, Turbotax really makes it very easy to do your taxes yourself. I've used it for years and have never had any problems.

    Re: Accountant referral?

My dad showed me how he did it, long hand. I still do it long hand first, but a great site I've used the last two years is File your taxes online with OLT.COM Comprehensive state and federal tax software. It's super easy to use.

I'm guessing you're still a student or a recent graduate? If so, your tax situation can't be very complex. I recommend you do it yourself and save some coin. Try File Taxes Online - Do Taxes FREE - File Taxes With TaxACT.

I honestly wouldn't pay anybody since you'll probably just have a 1040. That said, I've never once done my taxes I so don't really have room to talk. My wife is an accountant.

If you do not own a house, have kids, any major investments, do them yourself. It is not that hard.

    Re: Accountant referral?

Thanks for the help guys. I actually have some investments, a house, and have had two jobs in the past year... This is my concern. Think I can still handle it myself?
