    Iowa State a tough test

    Iowa State a tough test
Longhorns looking to rebound after loss, patch porous defense

With memories of a 10-game winning streak left in the sawdust after a pair of losses to open up conference play, the women's basketball team is looking to reverse its recent fortunes.

But the troubles may not stop anytime soon.

The No. 19 Longhorns (12-4, 0-2 Big 12) host Iowa State tonight at the Erwin Center. The Cyclones (12-3, 1-1) enter the game coming off an 84-77 double-overtime victory at No. 23 Colorado on Sunday.

Texas coach Gail Goestenkors said she isn't surprised by Iowa State's play and that the Big 12 is strong from top to bottom.

"Every team is a big team," Goestenkors said. "There's been a lot of upsets already."
    ................
    Concerning their loss to K-State:
    .................
The Wildcats also penetrated the Longhorns' defense, exploiting a Texas weakness. Normally a team that favors the 3-point shot, the Wildcats were allowed to drive freely. Iowa State also relies heavily on the long-range shot.

"In this league you're going to have to be able to defend penetration and the 3-point shot," Goestenkors said. "I don't think that we did either well [against Kansas State ]."

The Cyclones are hoisting up 319 3-point attempts and hitting at 39.5 percent, compared to the Longhorns' 219 attempts and 32.4 percentage. Guard Alison Lacey is the top 3-point shooter in the Big 12 in both shots made (45) and percentage (.484).

Lacey was instrumental in Iowa State's win at Colorado, scoring 27 points and shooting 7-of-11 from behind the arc. The team shot 51.9 percent from 3-point range against the Buffaloes and had the Big 12's Player of the Week.

I forgot that Gail Goestenkors left Duke for Texas... This will be quite the battle.

Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

Yeah, she's going to do some good things at Texas. Hopefully the Sisters can keep improving like they have and pull out a victory tonight. Go State!
