    Helium supplies almost tapped out?

Interesting article, I never thought of something like this as a problem, but could be in the future:

Back to using hydrogen for blimps.

Yeah helium is used for a lot of things, especially in welding.

Well, since He is inert, all the stuff we've used and haven't recycled must be floating around up in the atmosphere. Maybe we can develop a way to "mine" it from our new space station...

Re: Helium supplies almost tapped out?

I had a professor who always lamented the way helium is wasted on things like ballons and blimps... he refered to the good year blimp as "a travesty"...

Problem with hydrogen gas and helium gas is they are so light they escape our atmosphere...

Guess one day we'll have a star wars like mining colony for helium?

It is too light, so it will escape the atmosphere. The problem is once it is gone, it is gone.

Why cant we just go back to being cavemen. All you did was forage for food, grunt and tell stories by the fire, and lay around. All this science and dependancy on things sucks. =)

Re: Helium supplies almost tapped out?

We need to get NASA working on building a "cloud city" so insted of having a Tibanna gas mining operation, we can have a helium mining operation (on Saturn or Jupiter), and sell it for exhorbant prices to all those OPEC countries

While we're at it we should build light sabers and lazer guns...

Re: Helium supplies almost tapped out?

I know the price for helium sure has gone up the last few years. We (Praxair) used to sell a T cylinder (330cf) for around $45 in 2004. Now the same cylinder will run around $100.

Re: Helium supplies almost tapped out?

Heh heh for the savy investors out there... you should start hitting up party stores and buying tanks of Helium, store 'em in your basement. If those numbers are true you ought to get a good return on your investment in a few years... assuming the tanks actually hold the Helium

Re: Helium supplies almost tapped out?

We still have an abundance of hydrogen, right? All we need to do is turn nuclear fusion into a cheap and affordable method of power generation, and we'll have all the helium we need!

Re: Helium supplies almost tapped out?

Right. The only problem with that is building more fusion power plants...

(Not bashing the idea, just saying that technology is going to take much longer to deveolop than current supplies of Helium are projected to last for)

Fusion is a desired technology but it's not something that is being given top research priority...

Which is a whole other topic all together. Sustainable Fusion would provide a lot of electricity needs with fewer problems and polution than any current technology... just a lot of technical complications to overcome. In the mean time Fission could be a nice alternative (that would also allow for more Hyrdogen production with less of a carbon footprint), but there is that whole 3 miles island stigma still...
