It's time for Garrett to start

This is not a Peterson bashing thread, let me get that out in the open right off the bat.

I think the time is right however, to let Garrett be the starter and bring Petey off the bench. I think there are several reasons for this.

    1. We struggle out of the gate because teams pressure Peterson. We need to have Garrett in to make the D respect the dribble drive. If Garrett gets to the rim a couple times right off the bat, the opposing team has to lay off, which will make things easier for Peterson when he comes in.

    2. It would be a huge shot of confidence for Garrett, while I doubt it would affect BP much if at all.

    3. Peterson would be matched up with the opposing teams second stringers, which would help negate some of his shortcomings.

    4. Peterson would give our second string some shooting, which we have none of right now after our first 5.

    5. Garrett, Wes, and Rashon would be able to provide some defensive pressure of our own with their length to start the games.

Those are some reasons, I am sure there are more both for and against. Thoughts?

I agree. This has needed to happen for a while.

It was obvious against Baylor that we couldn't get into our half court offense unless DG was running the point. There is more to the game then just offense, but it was refreshing seeing DG assert himself in his first road game in the Big XII.

If teams continue to defend us similar to Baylor, I'm guessing you're going to see more and more from DG.

When Garrett drove and dished it off to Brackins for the slam was the first time this year I got really excited for the future... I hope we see ALOT of that over the next few years.

I don't know what the obsession is with Garrett. Maybe he should start taking better care of the ball before McD has him start.

Re: It's time for Garrett to start

I am not sure if it makes a huge difference who starts because we need them both to play significant minutes. Garrett played 29 minutes on Saturday compared to Peterson's 22. I feel like Diante is still playing a little tentative and it may help that he comes off the bench.

Once DG gets the confidence to go head-to-head against Big 12 guards plug him in as a starter and keep him there for the next four years, and sign 2-3 other guards with his ability to help him out.

I think it is the fact that he is making aggressive mistakes. I don't know about others, but I can live with those. Something that doesn't show in the stats is the secondary turnovers that could be caused by Peterson. There are many times where he gave the ball to guys in a bad position causing them to get charged with a turnover.

I think he's talented and he's got a lot of potential. He definately has more of an impact on the offense than BP does but his short coming is that sometimes he needs to slow it down and make better passes and decisions. If he wasn't turning the ball over about 4+ times a game he's probably be starting by now. He is playing more than BP lately and it matter more who finishes the game than who starts it. It would be nice to have a PG that could have more of an impact to start the game though.

The obsession is that anyone with two eyes and a lot of blind men can see how weak Peterson is in the half court. He has to operate from the half court line half the time because he isn't strong and fast enough with the ball to make anyone respect him offensively. Its flat out ridiculous to watch.

I'll admit I haven't seen a ton of games (only the ones on TV--not MediaCom). However, I have not seen this. I don't feel like Petey has anything to do with our early struggles. At the Baylor game, we came up the floor slowly with great pressure--and Petey with another 0 turnover game. I think that's the only thing Petey contributes right now--otherwise I consider him neutral. Don't forget that we WANTED to slow down the game.

Or they'll change their D and pressure him whenever he's in the game.

Probably. Perhaps a slight risk of killing his confidence if he does poorly, or inflating his ego.
    3. Peterson would be matched up with the opposing teams second stringers, which would help negate some of his shortcomings.
    Hmm . . . I don't pay that close attention to the opponent's roster.
    4. Peterson would give our second string some shooting, which we have none of right now after our first 5.
I'm pretty sure Petey didn't score against Baylor--and I certainly haven't seen him scoring much.
    5. Garrett, Wes, and Rashon would be able to provide some defensive pressure of our own with their length to start the games.
I don't know enough to comment on which person is better on D, nor if Garrett is a better compliment to the others as a whole on D.
