Lets not fire McDermott just yet (long)

I know most of us like McDermott and like the way the basketball program is headed but there seem to be a few that dont.

Lets not forget most of the problems with this team have to do with not having enough depth, shooters, and experence. Most of the problems have been out of Mac control.

Why was Mac hired: His resume was good, was coming off 3 NCAA tournys (2 at large births), he was wanted by other schools, he impressed the heck out of JP, he won everywhere he has been, he built programs from the bottom up, he was right down the road, he wanted the job, and this could be the last coaching job he ever has (he will coach here a long time and not use sucess to get better jobs). Was there a better coach out there for this job?

Is its Mac's fault most of Morgans players left? No
This staff has worked hard to get the players they want into this program, some have worked out some didnt. He is getting his players in here slowly. Its not Duke, NC, or Kansas where ISU can go out and 5 MCD All Ameriacans and compete right now. Mac has a great eye for talent and is in on guys before most schools are.

Everyone complained Mac couldnt recruit. All he did was throw a decent class of players together his first year at the last min.
One player couldnt keep his nose clean so Mac said bye.
Another didnt see eye to eye with the coach so he left.
One is still in Ames and going to be one of the best Cyclones ever.
One is a walk transfer that fills a role.
One is a good role player that given more time can be a good one.

His second class was a great class thus far.
One just put up 33 in his first Big 12 ROAD game.
One is going to be a good PG.
One didnt work out for reasons unknown.
One didnt fallow the rules so he was shown the door.
One got the middle finger by the NCAA.
One needed to redshirt but because of the middle finger he couldnt.
One is a walk on and well cannot hit anything
Another one is a walk on that i doubt was recruited to play much but due to other players having issues here he is. He does a good job and is a great teacher to the young guys.

    Look at next years class.
2 big guys not many are high on but this staff feels they can become good players.
1 PG that people claim is very good.
1 SG that can score how ever many points he wants. I dont care where you play HS basketball when you score like he does he is a great player.

It gets so old to come here and see people think the ship should be righted this soon. If in two years we are still struggling then we need to look at the program and coach. It seems a lot of people doubt what Mac is doing and thowing out every reason he wont win at ISU. Give him a bit of time to get his system in and a whole team of players. This rebulid is not even close to being done. It is very hard to build a program around walk-ons and JUCOs, let him get some Freshmen in and let them get their feet wet before you rip him. Give it time.

Wow the person who emailed SOUNDOFF and called for McD's head already should be hung from the highest tree in Iowa. How stupid can some of these people be.

I don't think Mac should be canned this year, next year, the year after that, or even the year after that.

BUT....I am getting tired of feeling like we're in a constant state of rebuilding with MBB.

Exactly... I just want the "we will be good NEXT year" to be over with. I know we're on our way.

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

Yeah, I do not like it either. I am not in the fire McDermott crowd yet. I have not agreed with a lot that he does and I do feel he gets outcoached a lot.

How long does he get though? Our previous coach made it to the post-season in his first two years, McDermott will not make it to any post-season in his first two years. I think 4 years is the max, just my thoughts. I hope he is the coach in Ames 10 years from now because that will mean ISU is winning and has done well.

Depends on how many years in to the Mac era we are.

Re: Lets not fire McDermott just yet (long)

Some folks like to say, 'well, it's college basketball. It shouldn't take very long to turn things around.'

Well, here is the reality; we live in Iowa. And for all the reasons we all love living here and being Iowans, it's not exactly the easiest place to recruit to. There is no beach front property. It's cold as heck in the winter, and winters are fairly long. Ames and Iowa City are not exactly cultural meccas. Both schools need facilities improvements.

It probably takes more time to do things at an Iowa State or an Iowa than it does in schools in other leagues.

And Iowans won't stand for things being done in a fashion that is less than honorable.

Greg is an honorable man, and he is building things from the long view, IMO.

He isn't going Juco Tech. He is building a program. He is building a future, not just building for the future.

Wow...I find this kind of talk scary. This sort of attitude is why we allowed our previous FB coach to hang around for 12 years with very limited success.

Why do so many Cyclone fans seem enamored of "keeping a coach for life"? Coaches with long tenure are the very rare exceptions in college FB and BB.

Re: Lets not fire McDermott just yet (long)

I can't believe there are actually people calling for his release. This guy is trying to be stability and respectability to ISU Basketball. The Eustachy scandal, falling graduation rates and the whole scheduling thing have all hurt the program. McD is building a good, solid foundation here. It takes time, be patient. I have quietly been concerned about ISU even being able to field a competitive team the last two years due to turnover of players and coaches.

Let McD do his job and allow his time to right the ship. I have faith and confidence in him. Furthermore, be supremely grateful that Rahshon stayed and help with this task. I admire the student athletes we seem to have on our team now (Clark and Staiger, specifically)

    Perhaps you missed this part...

"i really, really, really hope that he wins so that ...."

Nobody is suggesting he get a free pass.

What is so wrong with wanting a successful coach that stays? We've seen what happens with turnover. And the womens program seems be doing ok with Fennelly at the helm for a number of years.
