    Ames construction

Heard a new rumor tonight and thought that this might be a good place to share. The old Cyclone Truck Stop was bought and a new larger truck stop will be constructed there. And, a Menards will be going up off of that same Hwy30 exit. Also, a Kohls will be built between Target and the new Wal-Mart.

Hope it's all true. A better looking trip on 30 to the game.

There's room between the Walmart and Target for Kohls? Guess I don't pay enough attention.

I've been hearing about the Menard's for about 3 months now. I'm guessing that it is legitimately happening.

Let's wait for the city to approve this, they have a tendency to slow things down and drag things out for years!

    Re: Ames construction

What is with Ames trying to stop all businesses from moving in and making Ames a place people actuall want to live? We left Ames after school because other than some good restaraunts, you had to go to DSM for everything.

    Re: Ames construction

Nope, the Menards thing is NOT happening. I can't find the original post (on another board), but the poster was somehow involved with it. Apparently Menards tried to get the city to change both the zoning for some of the proposed site as well as the land use plan for that area. The city said no. What? Ames kicking a major retailer to the curb? Big surprise.

I did hear the Menards bit, however, what I was told on the gap between Wal-Mart and Target, was that Target is expanding.

Hopefully they do something because the abandoned old businesses don't look good.

That is the plan. I've never figured out exactly why, but Target HQ uses the Ames location as one of three pilot stores across the country. They test new programs and products and store layouts and technology, etc. at the pilot stores before rolling it out nationwide (if they ever do). Our store is apparently going to be the first test of how to expand an existing Target into a SuperTarget. I can't believe they've never done that before, but it is apparently the case. I don't know the timetable yet- plans are still being worked on, but they're obviously hoping to do it very soon, since the new Wal-Mart next door is opening in March.

It is pretty insane to see a walmart and target right next to each other. I wonder how that affects their businesses.

There are a super walmart and a super target back to back in cedar rapids. They both went up close to the same time and appear to both be doing fine.

Why do you think Wal-Mart did that? The existing Wal-Mart was out on the northern outskirts while Target is in prime real estate. And when Wal-Mart moves it's usually right next to where Target's been for years. At least that's usually how it works in the Quad Cities...

    Re: Ames construction

I have a friend that works at Target HQ in or close to the group that develops new stores and does upgrades. Based on what he has said I would be VERY surprised if Target goes to a SuperTarget in Ames.
