Spring Game at some other schools

Heard on the local radio today in College Station about what they are doing this year for their spring game. A sports entertainment company is putting together a "Gridiron Bash" at several schools (Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, West Virginia, Rutgers, Kansas State) that involves a "fan zone", concert, final practice, etc. An interesting concept, but what is most interesting and beneficial for the schools involved is that, according to the guy on the radio, each school is guaranteed $300,000 from the sports entertainment company for participating, and it could be upwards of $1 to $1.5 million depending on sales. Tickets for the concert and game at A&M will be $35 and they said the concert will be in Kyle Field. Unfortunately, it will be ZZ Top here, who I can only assume will be either in wheelchairs or using walkers.

    According to the website:
Gridiron Bash is a unique fan competition and entertainment experience the day before College Spring Football games, simultaneously on 15-20 Division I campuses nationwide. It is footballs Midnight Madness, only bigger and better! ...

In each location, Gridiron Bash will include tailgating zones, a huge pep rally, autograph sessions and chalk talk with former University legends, fan interactive zones, a final team practice in preparation for the next day's Spring Game and a top performer live in concert.

In addition, the USA Today Bash for Cash Series will establish which University has the most passionate and supportive fans. The winning school will receive a $1 million contribution to their general scholarship fund with 2nd and 3rd place receiving $500,000 and $250,000 respectively. Vote for your University!

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life:
The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves Orcs. ~ John Rogers

    You got that right.

I like this idea...anything that generates cash for the athletic department is good. Hope we can get in on stuff like this eventually.

Hopefully they charged money for the ISU spring games this year. I wouldnt mind paying 10 bucks a tickets.

8,000 people x 10 bucks.. easy 80,000 for the new stadium construction.

ZZtop was pretty good at whatever bowl game they played at. I thought it was one of the best halftime shows of any of the bowls, and was much better than the superbowl halftime lip sync fest.

Was it last year that Prince played halftime of the Super Bowl? Or two years ago? Anyway, that was the best halftime show ever! I do agree that ZZ Top's performance at the Orange Bowl was very entertaining!

Re: Spring Game at some other schools

The years that ISU tied the spring game into VEISHA was kind of the same idea. Go to the parade in the morning and the game in the afternoon with concerts throughout the weekend. Either way you've got to keep it free. It's a fun atmosphere and really gets the fans ready for the fall.

Last spring I saw the Penn State Blue-White spring game on TV! There were like 50,000 people who went to the scrimmage. PSU fans are overzealous though.

Re: Spring Game at some other schools

This would be a good idea I think. Doesn't Iowa State have a fan fest already with blow up games and stuff like that? Why can't you incorporate that into a concert, blow up games for kids, meet all the sports coaches and the like, players, and then watch the game. I think with a concert it would attract more people to the game and give people more stuff to do than watch spring game.

That's a pretty cool idea and you could really keep it in the ISU family if you got the Nadas to play the concert (considering they went to ISU). I'd pay $35 to got to all of that on a Saturday.
