...and to think if local authorities would have handled it like they should have, the loss of life and pictures of people at the Superdome would not have even happened.

BTW, my neighbor is from LA and his parents still live there. The city of New Orleans and the surrounding area has been skimming money off of the levee funds for years to help build golf courses and docks for luxury boats. The rationale was that it will raise the tax base to further help the levee's. Good job outta them.

This is rediculous and is one of the reasons why I have a hard time not hating lawyers. On a lighter note, the first thing I thought of when I read this was the scene from Austin Powers with Dr. Evil.

I think the Fed/Corps of Engineers should counter-sue...something like gross stupidity for not building everything on huge stilts like the people in monsoon country do...

The people knew the storm was coming. I remember watching news of thousands of people leaving new orleans before the storm hit. The people who stayed behind and weren't smart enough to turn on the weather channel don't deserve to get paid for their stupidity. There were extreme cases where some couldn't leave but the majority that remained could have.

You know why many would not leave....They wanted their welfare/social security checks! Many of them will not get direct deposit (because some are getting it illegally) and it was around the times their checks were to come.

The city of New Orleans supposedly had a plan to use their school buses to get people out of there, unfortunately the buses all sat there and flooded because they were not used.

There was no reason for the US government to have to go into there and bail people out.

FEMA coming in afterwards and helping with clean-up, rebuilding, temporary housing yes. The US government is not the savior of all. If that situation tells us anything, it says that some people are WANTING a nanny state here in the US. I really think it is a sad state of affairs when people cannot do anything for themselves anymore.

Re: The mother of all ridiculous lawsuits

The annual civil works budget of the Corps is 5-10 Billion a year. Quadrillion will be only after many years of inflation to the dollar. This is like those slave descendants wanting reparations and Native Americans want back South Dakota. Proves you can sue for anything in this country.

The three major Levee Boards were devoting most of their attention to building up their big marina and not maintaining their levees through repairs as the levees settled several inches. The land beneath the levees is sinking in places just like it is off Houston.

Re: The mother of all ridiculous lawsuits

If my tax dollars go to pay these type of claims that is ridiculous. I should sue then for misuse of my tax dollars being used for idiots living in these areas.

At what point do lawyers need to be responsible for these outrageous lawsuits. They should have some type of law put into place where failed lawsuits cost the plaintiff and lawyer XX fee for wasting everyone else's time. This would help assure the lawyers weed out and only pursue meaningful claims.

    What a joke.

Re: The mother of all ridiculous lawsuits

Here's how I'd handle this if I were judge-

    1. Let them sue.
    2. Find in favor of those that are suing.
    3. Award them monetary damages of $.02 each.

It is not exactly easy to move out of a place you were born into. The New Orleans population that suffered the most from the storm were in extreme states of poverty. Many did not have vehicles to evacuate them and were counting on other evacuation methods that never took place. Most had nowhere to go and no money to take them. On top of that, when has a hurricane in the US caused as much flooding and death as Katrina? Never. I'm sure many of the victims had experienced a hurricane in their lives, but none could have predicted the outcome of this one. A large population of New Orleans were relocated to different parts of the country and will never return home. Many others still live without a home. More than 2 years after the storm, there are still neighborhoods without electricity.

I realize the quadrillion dollar claim is rediculously stupid, as are all the billion dollar claims and even many of the claims for less than a billion. However, some people on this thread are pretty damn insensitive. There is one comment saying, "May another hurricane strike their dumbasses." People lost their lives and families. Many of the people that lived lost their livelihood. No home. No money. No job. Scammed by people claiming to help who really only wanted to steal settlement and insurance money.

It is easy to look back and ask why they didn't leave in time or ridicule them for living in a town under sea level. Show some humanity, sensitivity, and maybe even a little respect. If a disaster strikes you or your family, hopefully someone will show you the same respect.
