    Story City Pella Plant

Anyone able to confirm or deny that Story City Pella Windows workers were told today that the plant is closed now for good with no warning?
That would be a huge blow to that small town.

It is true, they will be closing in March.

I just saw that. I would have expected a job with Pella corp to be one of the more secure jobs around, but this housing slowdown must really be taking hold.

I worked at that place for 1 month in the summer while in college. After 2 weeks I wanted to quit but since i hate quitting it took me 2 more weeks to build up the nerve. I vowed never to buy Pella windows after working there.

I worked there too for about 2 years. I had about the same feeling. Its two years of my life that I'll never get back. After I left I told my friends I wouldn't go back for twice the money. It was not a pleasant working environment, both physically and politically. You felt like you were watching your back the entire time instead of doing your job.

I feel bad for all the workers, but some of the upper management I can't say I feel too bad for at all. I hope the workers will get a good severance package.

Interesting, Pella was often listed as one of the Fortune 100 best companies to work for. I'm suprised to see such negative experiences.
None the less, really sucks for Story City.

The Fortune 100 best companies to work for is a voluntary survey program, Fortune magazine rated the companies by the surveys that were turned in. Not every company in the world applies for it. Select employees were given the survey. And when I mean select, the management selected those who they knew would answer the questions to their liking. I never was offered to take one.

I heard that within the Pella Corporation that the Story City facility was by far and away the worst one to work for, as well as the worst managed (often go hand in hand) I heard this from people within and also outside of the organization. I am not surprised it is the first facility to go.

The retirement plan was one of the tops around, pay was decent. However, the atmosphere was terrible, by far the worst I have ever been around.

I used to be a manager at Pella Corp. It was and is a great company to work for.

However, the random selection of employees for the 'best place to work for' survey was hardly random.

Just curious, which location did you work at? I visited the "main plant" in Pella a few times and I noticed that the atmosphere seemed many times better than Story City.

I heard the same about the Carroll location.

I worked in Pella. Designer and Lumber plants.

It's sad to hear that they are struggling.

While that is at the discression of the employer and such.. blah blah.. I find it MOST IRONIC that outside the building and around the parking lot you could see tons of Cig butts in the rocks and the grass..

    Re: Story City Pella Plant

I worked in maintenance in Story City, the line managers there had a high turnover rate, as in they would leave the company for other jobs. I had a race with one of the managers I worked with on who would get out the first. He won. (He was considered a "golden child" by the upper management)

I worked with five line managers, when I left only 1 was still there. They usually worked 60+ hours a week. At least I got overtime.
