    Lucca's still doing it right

When the NCAA came out with their ****** decision against Lucca I tried to stay neutral basing any final conclusions on Lucca's decision to stay in school or pursue a pro career in Europe. Having decided to stay and pursue a college degree just reinforces he is doing everything right. The NCAA should be ashamed as so many players just use college ball as a springboard into the NBA. Lucca may not have yet stepped onto the court, but his character has already made him a Cyclone I will proudly talk about for years to come.

Re: Lucca's still doing it right

I think Lucca has gained a huge amount of respect from the fans for how he has handled this situation. He could have easily made public statements against the ruling, however, he chose to show an extreme amount of maturity by quietly accepting the NCAA's decision. I wonder if the fans will continue with the "Free Lucca" chant throughout the rest of the season.

I always feel sad inside when i look over at lucca during basketball games, and he's sitting there, patiently waiting for next year to come, in the front row of the student section. I wonder what he's thinking...

I hope Lucca don't suck in basketball. He is going to have a lot of pressure to do good.

"...hmm. If I did a ball fake left, crossover right, sending the defender guarding me into a Rahshon screen, would the guy defending Rahshon be quick enough to guard me before I'm able to drain my 3?"

    Just guessing...

Re: Lucca's still doing it right

I meant to post this a while ago, but got busy with the holidays. Once the furor of Lucca's appeal being rejected died down, I kind of forgot about this. But this thread gives me an opportunity to post this. I e-mailed Dan Wetzel, the Yahoo sports columnist who has written several columns in the past criticizing the hypocrisy of the NCAA, shortly after Lucca's appeal was denied. I was hoping (and am still hoping) that he writes a column exposing the NCAA's double standards in determining eligibility issues based on the Lucca Staiger decision. I haven't heard anything back yet (and suspect that I won't), but at least CF provides me a forum to share what I wrote:

    Dan-

I've always enjoyed your columns and respected your opinion, even on the (very) rare occasions when I may not agree with you. One thing I've always appreciated is your willingness to take the NCAA to task and expose their frequent hypocrisy. That's why I'm writing to you to request that you consider writing a column on the NCAA's recent ruling on the eligibility of Iowa State basketball player Lucca Staiger.

I suspect that you may have already heard a thing or two about his situation, but I will give you a quick recap. Staiger, a highly-regarded prospect from Germany, signed with Iowa State last spring. He was forthright in complying with all of the NCAA requests for information about his club team. The club team included two American-born players who had competed collegiately at the Division III level, and were paid minimal stipends for their participation. Although Lucca never received a dime in compensation, the NCAA's new Eligibility Clearinghouse ruled that his involvement in the team was such an egregious violation of NCAA rules that they revoked his eligibility for his entire freshman year.

All of the petitions and appeals have run their course, and there is no way to save Lucca's season at this point. But I feel that there is a great story here about how the NCAA is once again displaying their trademark incompetence, hypocrisy, and lack of common sense. Lucca is, by all accounts, a stand-up kid whose primary motivation in accepting a basketball scholarship was to receive a college education (he has decided to stay at Iowa State to complete his degree rather than return to Germany to play professionally). But the NCAA, in their infinite wisdom, has saddled him with about as stiff of a penalty as it has ever given out.

The frustrating thing is, there are foreign players who are currently on the rosters of other NCAA basketball teams who DID receive compensation to play in Europe prior to coming to the U.S., or who played on true professional teams even if they received no compensation. However, these players were either not penalized at all by the NCAA, or in rare cases, received penalties of ten games or less. The NCAA has shown no inclination to revisit the eligibility of these players in the wake of their decision on Lucca Staiger. What's more, players who have received actual monetary compensation from boosters or who have been rewarded with bogus summer jobs are often given nothing more than a slap on the wrist by the NCAA. Lucca, meanwhile, did everything he was told to do in order to maintain his eligibility, and yet fell victim to an arbitrary decision by the NCAA to retroactively apply a new set of eligibility clearinghouse standards to him. How is it that players who knowingly break the NCAA's rules are treated with such leniency by the NCAA, but a player like Staiger loses an entire year of eligibility?

I am happy to provide you with links to stories if you are interested in following up on this story. I recommend you make a quick visit to freelucca.com for more information.

Thanks for your consideration on this. I look forward to hearing from you.

BvK, you've got to quit making so much sense because I "must spread some rep around" before giving more to you.

I have often thought this. I think many are just assuming he is a smaller version of Dirk Nowitzki. Hopefully, he is as good as everyone is assuming that he is!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

EASILY, cause I'm sure Lucca can knock down an open three. And the moment he made the three pointer everyone would know it's not Adam.

Wearing street clothes on the bench. Luckily for WSU they didn't need him this year anyway.
