    Thoughts on Austin...

Just got back from the game late last night, and I came away with a few thoughts:

Texas fans were great. Very friendly and welcoming. Before the game, my favorite fans were OSU, but I've got to go with Texas now. Classy before, during and after the game.

Their marching band played "Bells of Iowa State" during their pre-game routine. I thought that was a great thing to do for the visiting team and it's fans.

Texas has amazing facilities. There's no other word to describe it. It's easy to see why they have their pick of athletes, which showed on the field by the way. They are a good team, very fast and very athletic. They hit hard, and played with passion.

I felt our team was a little intimidated by the surroundings, but settled down fine. A few mental mistakes were made, and a few balls should have been caught. I thought the game plan was good, and the playcalling was very aggressive. I'm very glad our team went there to win (unlike Nebraska at USC). Texas was obviously pumped up for this game, as were the fans, and they weren't looking ahead to anyone. It was obvious we had there attention and got their best shot. We were outplayed by a better team.

I'm glad I saw the game in person, and I feel good going into the remainder of the Big XII schedule after we play UNI.

    Re: Thoughts on Austin...

I agree, I personally thought this would be a better game, but you could sure tell we were intimidated in the 1st 5 mins of the game. It has been a long time since I have seen a team go down 16-0 in the 1st 5 mins of play. I think there were 2 critical plays in the game, the Parker late hit, which was very late and inexcusable IMO. I know he is a frosah and will learn, but he should never ever let that happen again. I also was very upset when we had a 3rd and 1 in the 3rd quarter after that huge turnover we got when Texas was just about to score, and we had Scales in as our back and decided to call a pass play, which was broken up very fast.

I wondered about the 3rd and 1 play too... but then I thought play action was actually a pretty aggressive call. In retrospect it was the wrong one, but it could have been a huge play. I can't fault the coaches on that one.

Texas will not lose any more games this year, and you had to have known that going into this game. They lost to Ohio State and that's the worst Texas will be all this year.

Red River Shootout should be an awesome game this year. I dont think I would say that is a for sure win for Texas, but I would think it does favor them at this point.

And I think if Texas played OSU now, the outcome would be much different. They are going to keep getting better and better, and could very possibly be playing for another National Championship.

    Re: Thoughts on Austin...

If you think Texas will lose at Lincoln you are dreaming. Nebraska will lose not only the Texas game but also at Texas Tech and even at Iowa State (cross my fingers). I don't think they can win at A&M either. I still think we will have a good season this year if we can win out the rest of the way. Oklahoma will be a tough game on the road but that's just one more road game that we may not win. All remaining games should be very winnable.

I also thought the TX fans were very nice. The stadium and the video board are amazing and that thing is definitely as big as advertised.

    Re: Thoughts on Austin...

What the heck to Texas fans have not to be nice about!?!? They have it SO good. Great University with awesome athletics in the best city in Texas. The only downside is that in August, it is a few degrees hotter than the 9th level of hell.

Did you know that women can go topless in Barton Springs???!? Have you ever been to 6th street on a saturday night? And then realize that the locals think that 6th street is "lame" and go to even cooler night spots?

If you have never been to Austin, go. Especially if you love live music.

But how are there fans when they actually think you might win a game. It is easy to be nice to fans of a team that you think you will walk over.
