    08 - 09 Shooting Guard Log-Jam

Some of the Bball threads have got me thinking, we are going to have a plethora of 2 guards next year. As far as 'pure' 2 guards, we are going to have Stagier, Boozer, Haluska, and Eikmeier. I don't think we will see Wes at the 2 next year, he will be playing the 3/4 again next year following Hubalek and Clark's departure. However, with Buckley coming in, Peterson and Garrett might both be looking at time at the two guard spot. That is 6 potential players right there for one position. And that isn't even factoring in Cameron Lee. It's going to be interesting watching GMac sort it out.

If necessary - Lucca appears to have the size and build to play a 3 if we wanted a smaller lineup.

That's the nice thing - I think we have some flexibility in a number of these players to play a couple spots.

Regardless - having too many potentially good players is better than the alternative. I'll take it.

Here's to hoping Boozer grows 6 inches in the off season and becomes a clone of his big bro...

Agreed, I think Staiger will realistically be the back-up small forward and starting shooting guard.

This is going to sound bad, but hopefully Peterson, Haluska, and Lee all hardly see the floor next year. There will be a plethora of scholarship guards on the roster, and if they can't beat out walkons then I will be disappointed.

    Re: 08 - 09 Shooting Guard Log-Jam

That is a good problem to have. I dont think there will be a problem with too many good players. One of them is going to start, one be the the back up, one to back up the small foward, and one to do it all. There is also that redshirt option to put on someone. With Lucca being a Soph and him as good as everyone says he is one would think he will replace Clark. The others will fight for the bench spot. Having depth will also allow the young guys to learn and not get thrown into the fire.

    Re: 08 - 09 Shooting Guard Log-Jam

One thing solid in 08-09 due to the plethora of guards issue - we should be able to match up much better against 3-guard attack teams. We seem to have some problems now defending fast, three-point shooting squads.

There will be a jam at the 3-spot as well: Staiger, W. Johnson, C Mann, W. Eikmeier and C. Johnson.

At many times in the past 10 years of Iowa State basketball you could have looked ahead a few years and predicted a logjam at a given position, but the reality of the situation is that we have been undermanned even with our best teams. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm not all that worried.

So alothough you attempt"ed to say you didn"t understnad, now you do. Fair enough?

    Re: 08 - 09 Shooting Guard Log-Jam

Has C. Johnson ever played the 3 spot? I really don't think he or Mann are intended to play the 3. I think they are both down low guys only.

With Lucca being a Soph and him as good as everyone says he is one would think he will replace Clark.
I hope Wesley slides over to the 3. He really struggles guarding quick guys, hopefully he can guard guys who are a bit bigger and slightly slower with his length more effectively.

    Re: 08 - 09 Shooting Guard Log-Jam

Since this is leaning that way I'll just start it,

    PG - Buckley - Garrett - Peterson
    SG - Lee - Elkheimer - Peterson
    SF - Staiger - Boozer
    PF - W Johson - C Johnson
    C - Brackins - Thompson

    Go small and move.

I think this would be a really fun lineup in certain cases but I don't know if it's Mac's style or the way he's trying to build the team. I think at the start of the year it's going to be:

    PG - Peterson - Buckley/Garrett
    SG - Staiger - Garrett/Eik
    SF - Wesley - Staiger - Boozer
    PF - Brackins - C. Johnson - Mann
    C - Thompson - Brackins - Hamilton

I think it will change up as the year goes on, hopefully with some of the new freshman guards and bigs asserting themselves.

If that is the starting 5 the team will be in trouble. I doubt a freshman will come in and be the starting PG, Lee has to improve a lot to start, I dont really think Wes will move back inside, C Johnson will start at the PF (look for him to make big strides in getting better before next year. Peterson has shown he can hit 3s and if not playing the PG he wil be playing SG a lot. I doubt Mac will lean on freshman too much next year.

Wow, I am high on Lee too, but he will not be our starting 2 guard, and Buckley is not going to be the starting PG.

    I see 2 starting line-ups depending on match-ups.

    Normal:

    Garrett
    Staiger
    W Johnson
    Brackins
    Thompson

    Small ball:

    Buckley
    Garrett
    Staiger
    W Johnson
    Brackins

I actually think we will see each of these starting line-ups about 50% of the time. I think Peterson will be the first guard off the bench in each case.

This is a pretty good line-up, but like you said previously, if we're depending a lot on Peterson next year we're in trouble. I hope Garrett or Buckley step forward and win the PG spot. I'm still hoping Garrett will be the starting PG by the end of this season. This isn't anything against Peterson. I appreciate what he's done this year and I think he's a smart player. But I think we need more athleticism at the spot once we get into conference play.

I would be upset if they did. They are doing an ok job in a pinch. It will be very interesting to see how they stand up to Big 12 talent.
