    MEAT MARKET

I heard this book talked about while watching one of the High School All-American games today:

Meat Market: INSIDE THE SMASH-MOUTH WORLD OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL RECRUITING

    [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Meat-Market-SMASH-MOUTH-FOOTBALL-RECRUITING/dp/1933060395/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199579681&sr=1-1"]http://www.amazon.com/Meat-Market-SMASH-MOUTH-FOOTBALL-RECRUITING/dp/1933060395/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199579681&sr=1-1[/ame]

I'll be flying for work this week, so I'm going to pick it up before I leave. It looks like a great read, especially in the heart of recruiting season.

I thought some other Fanatics might be interested.

    Has anyone read it yet?

I bought it last night and am only about 100 pages in but it's fascinating. In fact, it's only about 290 pages so I'm already dreading getting to the end.
One familiar name in the book is Barney Farrar who is an assistant on the Ole Miss team, which is who the book is about.

I heard the same. Doesn't it highlight the recruiting of Joe McKnight of USC. Thats where I remember them plugging it. Would be an interesting read considering I will never be athletic enough to even get picked by the backyard kickball team.

    Re: MEAT MARKET

I finished this book last night.

It's not mind-blowing, but it provides a great view into the inner-workings of how recruiting works at a BCS school (Ole Miss, in this case).

The one thing that I take away from the book is that there is a LOT more going on under the "recruiting covers" than what we see on sites like Rivals and Scout.

I would definitely recommend reading this as we head into the recruiting home-stretch. There is a good chance that it will give you a whole new (if not broader) perspective on how the entire process works, and what to make of certain events (soft verbals, decommitments, players that "disappear" from prospect lists, etc.)

    Rating: Highly Recommended

2000, if there was one thing that surprised you the most from the book, what would it be?

    Re: MEAT MARKET

Sorry, CTTB78... this thread got buried...

Some things that I was surprised about were:

1.) How much of a daily grind the process is for all the assistant coaches, all year
2.) How much "family time" with the recruits was involved/required by the coaches
3.) How much effort schools/A.Depts. will put into getting a talented, but academically-marginal, kid into their school.
4.) Coaches, or at least their helpers in the A.Dept., really do get information about recruits from Rivals, Scout, etc., but they do not rely on their rankings.

Overall, it was a great read with Signing Day dead-ahead (there's still time to read it - it's a quick read!).

    Re: MEAT MARKET

I thought this thread might have been about Press day at the Arizona SuperBowl yesterday. The gals turned out in droves for Tom Brady. One gal even proposed to him: the real Mrs. Brady.

And here's another excerpt that ESPN.com had posted in the Fall:

ESPN - Orgeron: 'If he comes to Oxford, we'll change the bricks on Manning Way' - College Football

If you're not already worn out on recruiting, it's a great read.

Read Barry Switzers book "Bootleggers Boy". It's old but it has some stories in it that are crazy recruiting stories.

    Re: MEAT MARKET

Another really good book that involves recruiting is "The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game." by Michael Lewis. It is a really good book, and toward the end it details his recruitment, including a part on how he was recruited by Orgeron.
