This would be a tough choice.

Hawai'i - Great place, better program.

SMU - Better facilities, more money.

Don't confuse hope for a plan.

maybe its just me, but it would be a very easy decision if it was me. Hawaii has to just be an awesome place to coach and recruit.

Only reason for going to SMU would be money. Horrible program, no recruiting edge, no point.
It would be truely dissappointing to see him leave Hawaii, when I am sure when his contract is up hhe will be getting rewarded by Hawaii for all he is done with a boost in pay.

    True but $800k << $2 million.

$2 million is a lot of money to pay a coach...especially for SMU.

Re: SMU talking with June Jones

    1. Personally, I believe $1.7-2 million is overpaying for June Jones. Granted, what he has done at Hawai'i is amazing, but that is more than doubling his pay, which I don't believe he has earned as of yet.

    2. Yeah, coaching and recruiting at Hawai'i would be amazing, but I've read before that the key/hard part of recruiting there is figuring out whether or not the kid actually is considering going to school and playing football in Hawai'i or if they just want the free trip there for the visit. Granted, recruiting at SMU would be much tougher, but still...

Re: SMU talking with June Jones

I think he is going to take the job. Hard to think that SMU is a better option then Hawai'i, but I think it is. Not to mention the money and upgrade in facilities.

I still remember reading an article about how Colt Brennan has so many parking tickets because of not having parking for players near practice facilities. I believe the choice players had were to walk for awhile, park and get a ticket, or get dropped off. Not exactly an upscale program that a coach would want.

Had SMU not gotten the death penalty in the '80s it would be a much bigger factor today. They used to have pretty good teams I think.

Yeah, they were amazing when Eric Dickerson and Craig James were playing running back.

(Yes, the same Craig James that was/is on ABC for college football)

Re: SMU talking with June Jones

SMU is an established program with a good history behind it. They have a nice on-campus stadium that is about 10 years old or less and Dallas sits in the middle of a fertile recruiting territory. Hawaii has high school facilities and a tiny program budget.

I agree with bkurt that at $1.7 million Jones is over paid, but the SMU people are sick of losing and JJ can inject the program with a jolt of good PR and maybe hit the recruiting ground running with all that Sugar Bowl buzz around him. If Jones can get Hawaii to the Sugar Bowl, he can get a winning season at SMU.
