    Buckley Update - Jan 2, 2008

The Detroit Free Press doesn't give us anything more than:

Romulus 86, Detroit Pershing 75: Dominique Buckley scored 31 for Romulus.

I'll look for something in the Detroit News.

Update to update: I couldn't find anything in the News.

He should be good since he is from a big city like Detroit, and not some po-dunk town in Nebraska (sarcasm).

Exactly. Just look how easy the transition has been for DG.

Actually Dominique is not from Detroit. He is from a much smaller town southwest of Detroit. (not sarcasm as I quite agree with curt).

Nice. However, the fact remains that the level of competition between Romulus and Detroit Pershing comes far closer to approximating the kind of competition one will face in DI CBB than the level of competition between Fremont Bergon and Yutan.

I have never said that a great player cannot come from a small town...heck, Larry Bird was from French Lick, IN (which I believe had only about 1,500 people). I am just dubious of the kid from Fremont being able to come to ISU and contribute (ever...let alone right away).

I am originally from NW Iowa (a small town by the way) and as a kid growing up I was able to watch 4 different HS BB State Tournaments every spring...Iowa's, South Dakota's (Sioux Falls station), Nebraska's (Sioux City station) and Illinois' (WGN). Without question, the level of play in Illinois was by far the most superior. Then came Iowa significantly below Illinois but decent play. Then came Nebraska which was significantly below Iowa with the exception of the teams from Omaha. Last was SD...although I enjoyed watching the teams from reservations play...long pony tails and great names...Billy Running Bear, Joseph Still Waters, etc.

The point is that history has shown us that precious little basketball talent comes out of Nebraska (it is certainly not like Indiana). Earlier I asked someone to give me the names of great CBB players from Nebraska and I was given two kids that came out of Omaha...Erick Strickland and Andre Woolridge. Woolridge was a true Nebraskan, however, Strickland was born in Alabama and moved into Nebraska from California. The bottom line is that I didn't get any "small town" Nebraska kid that went on to be a great CBB player. Here's to hoping Eikmeier is the first!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

You are correct that there are not any Nebraska born NBA players currently based on this website.

    Where Birth Happens

However, there is a decent player from Coeur d'Alene, ID (Luke Ridnour) who was a pretty decent college player that was perceived as undersized and from a small school.

Jeff Boschee was from Valley City ND, good enough to play pg at KU. Eric Piatkowskie at Nebr. was from Rapid City. KU had another guard from SD that everybody hated because he was so fiesty, can't name him. Jared Riener was from Tripp, SD. He would have been a lot better with a coach, he was good enough to get drafted by the NBA. You can't throw these guys out just because they come from a small prairie town.

Joe Krabbenhoft at Wisconsin is from Yankton, SD.

Mike Miller, you know, that guy in the NBA? He's from Mitchell, SD. Totally wiped the floor with everyone for two years in the high school tournament. It was ungodly.

Wasn't Trajan Langdon (Duke) from Anchorage, Alaska. We all know how intense the competition is in Alaska.

I had no idea that in order to effectively evaluate a player you had to evaluate the careers of anyone that grew up within a 500 mile radius. Talk about stereotyping.

I agree that there haven't been too many great bball players come out of rural Nebraska. Omaha has produced some solid guys, but what is wrong with basketball in the Des Moines metro area? There is just not much D-I talent being produced here; actually much more in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area.

Isn't Romulus the suburb right by the Detroit Airport? I believe it is still part of the Detroit metro. It's not exactly the Cass Corridor (skid row of Detroit), but it's not Mayberry either. I would guess that its a large high school with some really good competition.

and Carlos Boozer was from Juneau, but played all but the high school season in Seattle.
