    Re: Quiet before the Storm

Count me in as nervous but excited.

I like that we have three consecutive games against more traditional offenses before getting to mostly spread offenses, instead of going back and forth as we have to most years. The defense will have plenty of reps and hopefully be better prepared to slow down those types of offenses. Then we have two weeks to regroup for Baylor and the rest of the Big XII.

Your right and those walkons won't be playing on Saturday. Fact is Ferch is #1 and earned a scholarship for a reason, and that reason is because he is a good player that beat out other guys on scholarship.

Hopefully surprised in a good way. If I'm surprised because they are worse than I expected then we are in for one of the worst seasons in the history of ISU football.

Also remember how bad last season was and tough to get excited until we see the product. Hopefully Saturday there is a lot of excitement

Seems like this has been the lowest key start of the the CPR era or is the enthusiasm still there but hidden?

This first game is against a good team who have been national champions three years in a row. They pound the ball and they play tough on defense. This is a big test for the new staff members and a must win for the rest/success of the season. Another UNI debacle would be a crusher.

    What do you think?
i agree it's a must win game for the health of the program and fans especially. The fans have been subjected to so many home losses the past few season we really deserve something positive. Personally I'm fully expecting us to lose on Saturday which is the reason I'm so subdued.

    What changed for you?

I like seeing some size at DE that we haven't enjoyed for a while, & Meeks definitely passes the eye test. There's just not many snaps between a lot of these new faces. I think the defensive line can really cause some havoc IF they stay healthy. I get the feeling that unit is just an injury or two away from disaster.

In all seriousness, I am super pumped to crack a cold one and fire up the grill at 5 am. That is what I am most excited for.

“Urgency,” Rhoads said. “That’s exactly what I told our staff. It’s exactly what I told our players. Urgency in getting your job done. That’s in a 100 percent rate of speed at executing your responsibility — whether it’s a fit, whether it’s a tackle, whether it’s a route, whether it’s a cut-off block. Everybody needs a little bit more urgency in coaching and playing.”

    Re: Quiet before the Storm

One thing is for sure. Either the coaches learned to tone down their "coach speak" from last years sunshine pumping before the season, or they really are being cautiously optimistic about the team by keeping pretty quiet and not saying too much.

Which is why not every walk-on is starting.

Really outside of the elite programs you will find former walk-ons starting. The likely Big 12 DPOY is a former walk-on. A few starting gives me zero concern. Projecting the development of 18 year olds is not easy and there is not that much difference between a two, or even three star, and a good walk-on. Are you worried about Morrissey starting? Because he is essentially a former walk-on. In fact, like UNI, we will be playing a team full of "would have been walk-ons", so you must have no concerns about the game.

Whoa. I was just listing him to make a point. Getting by WITHOUT walk-ons at Iowa State is unrealistic. I get that.
