    Re: Quiet before the Storm

This team is still a year away- that's why. Too much youth on defense, and a new playbook to absorb.

There's plenty of reason for optimism in the future with the younger classes and Mangino's posse, tho. Find a couple stud juco D linemen, and we could be back in business.

I just don't see it this year. The first three ground & pound teams are gonna punch our interior D right in the mouth. Then our young safeties are going to bite on play fakes. Gonna get ugly fast.

    Re: Quiet before the Storm

Last season I saw everything I needed to see against UNI. My expectations were really low and they were immediately met in the opener.

This year isn't so cut and dried. I don't expect the offense to be explosive running a new system the first few games, but the potential is there for some breakout games later in the season. The D I have really low expectations with all the youth and inexperience at LB and S. They might look better than they are in the first 3 games playing slow-it-down power run offenses, but will likely get abused by the better big 12 offenses. The schedule doesn't look all that bad. NDSU, Toledo, WV and Kansas are all very winnable games. KSU, Iowa, TT and TCU are games we could win if they don't play well or we play great. The rest look like double digit losses outside of a Nebraska style meltdown.

I forsee a gritty 5-7 type season with a couple headscratching wins and losses. I won't really be all that upset if we only win 3 or 4, it's kind of a 2nd rebuild year. If they play themselves into a 7th loss in early Nov, them my attention moves to Hoiball.

I am excited. This week can't go fast enough for me. with that being said I wish it was a night game because I love the atmosphere at night games! I am not nervous about this game, the guys will come out ready and punch NDSU in the face. I think the defense is going to surprise alot of people on here.

Gawd I hope so. I think there's plenty of potential there, but it's hard not to be nervous when you see the two deep littered with freshmen & sophomores plus a former walk-on.

Youth and inexperience don't make me nervous especially when they are as athletic and talented as I think these guys are. Same with a walkon, we have had plenty of walkons play who made more of an impact that some scholarship players ever did.

Rinse and repeat. ISU is always young and just a juco or two away. Always building for next year.

You are right though. Just a bad feeling on how this is going to go.

I think a lot, probably most, of us are ready to be excited, but want to see something to make it more reasonable.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

All the blow hards are out of air. Im optimistic but know better with us and football. Predicting 31-24 win. Lazard scores a td and Meeks turns out to be an animal.

    Re: Quiet before the Storm

I haven't missed a home game in 19 years. In those 19 years of watching ISU their winning percentage is just under 40%, which really hasn't changed much with Rhoads.

Every few years we'll have some amazing win and once per decade we'll have an above average team that can get us top 5 in the conference. Once every few years I'll get all stoked that the ISU football team is making some kind of amazing turnaround and then we'll get punched in the face by a good team.

As I've gotten older and dealt with so many football disappointments, I just role with it. At this point I just want to make sure I haven't forgotten anything on my tailgating list.

Not every walk-on is a Jordan Carstens or Jack Whitver. That's all I'm saying. I hope Ferch whoops some ***.

    Re: Quiet before the Storm

I'm excited for this game, but I know that we are young defensively. I think that Mangino will prove himself to be what we all think he is (an offensive guru). I think he is much like Hoiberg, in that he operates the team to their strengths, instead of trying to fit them into a system. We are not as talented as pretty much every team in the Big 12, but if we do things fundamentally like K-State, there isn't a reason we shouldn't win this game. I think MM will make our offensive guys more fundamentally sound and in return we will win.

    Re: Quiet before the Storm

I've been one of the really negative people (as far back as the 2012 season even) and didn't think I would be able to get into this season at all, but I've actually started to get excited in the past week or so. Now I can't wait for Saturday and I wish I was going to be there. If we see some solid progress over last year I'll probably be as optimistic about our program as I was pre-Messingham.

I'm nervous about NDSU, but overall I feel better about this season than I did going into last year.
