[QUOTE=Section110;.... That's a coping mechanism for a diehard fan who doesn't want to face the reality that the talent level on that field last year may not have been as wide....[/QUOTE]

So says Hawkeye fans when explaining why their team has a losing record the last 15 years to evidently... more talented Iowa State teams.

What on earth do you think I put the big *** green face with huge eyes on that post for now Bryce?

Truth is, there isn't an answer to any of the points you guys are trying to make that will satisfy anyone so what's the point in trying? Sometimes lesser teams beat teams that they have no business beating. Sometimes when you have the benefit of hindsight and you can look at the results from the entire season it can show you that the reality is that those two teams were actually quite equal to each other in terms of talent and results. Hindsight is always 20/20. Immediately after the game you never know.

In regards to ISU and UNI last year it's really tough to tell what the truth is because both teams had injuries that made a significant impact on their season. It's possible both teams could have had more wins without the injury factor. ISU only won 3 games and UNI won 7 including the head to head match up, but ISU plays in a much tougher conference. So really it's quite debatable. If you want to compare it to the Iowa/UNI game of 2009 go ahead, but it doesn't make much sense because Iowa went on to prove they were a damn good team that year. Which makes the whole "they just weren't ready or they just didn't play very well" theme come across a little better. ISU went on to win 3 games against pretty awful opponents. That doesn't do a whole lot for trying to justify they were the more talented team.

Like I said, there isn't really a correct answer here. It's all hypothetical. The better team that day won. That's pretty much all you can say definitively.

NOt at all the same thing. Did you even read his quote? He said the WAY they won that game makes the claim that UNI might have been more talented somewhat valid. He's referring to a team that outgained their opponent, lost the turnover battle 2-0, lost a fumble at the 1 to keep it an 8 point victory instead of a 15 point ROAD victory. Don't think that was the case in the games you mention.

UNI was not more talented. Not at all. Not a bit.

Agreed, and couldn't have beaten some of the teams we did last year

I don't think UNI is more talented, but are you arguing that they couldn't beat Tulsa, WVU, or Kansas? Those were some pretty bad teams.

You must be referring to the Iowa State-Texas game last year. We dominated in total yards, TOP, lost the turnover battle, and were penalized almost twice as many yards and still won (well to anyone watching the replays).

Only in North Dakota and Iowa City will anyone try to say Iowa State had more talent that day than Texas.

I doubt they would have gone 3-0.

obviously we're arguing straw men, but 5 losses (some of them in OT) in the Missouri Valley does not make a strong argument to winning 3 D1 games. Especially only scoring 3 pts against Illinois State.

it's something that irked me later in the season

Wasn't most of that due to key injuries?
They weren't a world beater, but we only got past real bottom feeders. They could handle the teams we beat.

So if UNI beats Iowa on Saturday, it will be because they have more talent, right?

    Re: Quiet before the Storm

I think its fairly obvious that ISU's total talent pool is going to be better than UNI's. Those things don't matter however if you can control the line of scrimmage. We all will agree on both sides of the ball our lines were awful. Injuries, youth, blah blah blah whatever. The lines sucked.
