As always, great stuff Blum. Can't wait for you to take the reigns from Walters... no hurry of course, we all love John. I'm excited to watch you on TV coming up here very soon.

That stat about the first downs doesn't surprise me. I think last year's offense was the worst thing I've ever had to watch as a Cyclone, and I was in school during Morgan AND Chizk's tenures........

One yard and a cloud of dust by the halfback, two yards on a bubble screen, three yards on a qb keeper, and a punt.

I remember I was at the game with my father, who coached high school football for years. I tend to be a know-it-all anyways, so he isn't easily impressed when I try to show off my knowledge of the game. I predicted play for play 3 drives in a row all 3-and-outs. He was impressed at the time, but if you think back about it now, Messingham was like a toddler being thrown into a pit of vipers, of course I guessed his plays. If I can do it, you know some guy making 1 million a year can.

Re: Blum Preview Column: The season of wait & see

Hey Brent, nice article man! Your first down % reminded me of another crazy stat tied to last season which was the amount of quarters we played without getting an automatic first down flag. Not having the ball a lot really helps explain not getting many automatic first downs calls I'd assume.

Does anybody remember how many quarters were played before the team got their first automatic first down? For some reason I keep thinking it was another pretty extraordinary stat for football. Thanks!

I think it was in the sixth game.?

    Cyclone
Iowa State became the Cyclones after they leveled Northwestern in 1895. As the Chicago Tribune (9/29/1895) noted:
    'Struck by a Cyclone
It Comes from Iowa and Devastates Evanston Town'

Looking at all of that, it's no wonder that CPR had to nearly clean house with his coaching staff. Almost makes you wonder if Wally shouldn't be on the hot seat as well? I know for some reason he's "untouchable", but you can't allow teams to push you around like that and survive as a DC very long either IMO.

Now do people understand why ISU is getting virtually no respect this year from anyone? Now do you realize why NDSU would be favored against us? I know it's a new year, but c'mon...
    What?

Now do you understand why you get no respect?

It's not like Wally has put multiple linebackers from multiple generations from multiple teams into the NFL or anything...

No, I understand why Wally deserves at least one mulligan.

My only point is that he does deserve a little criticism and should take some ownership for what happened defensively last year as well.

If we don't have the talent, he is partially responsible for that as well.

That Super Bowl makes you wonder if Manning's starting position is not a little hot. You do not have bad games like that and survive as a starting QB very long.

You're relating one game against a defense at the top of their professional game to an entire season of poor performance to discount his argument? That's not a credible approach.

No one said to fire Wally. As the leader of the defense, he does have to own that atrocious season on the defensive end. That's how leadership works.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

Rhetoric is never lost on you, Erik.

He said something reactionary due to his emotional investment and in general is full of taking one negative thing and extrapolating it to an extreme. Remove yourself from being a fan with an example like Manning and it seems crazy doesn't it? Discount an entire career much longer than Manning's as one of the top DC's in the profession to one down season with an undermanned group in the best offensive conference in the country. Wally is middle-management. Leadership works when you consider all the variables at hand, and you do not lose your mind cry like a little ***** when it does not go your way. No said he said anything about firing him, so I do not think using that as part of your retort is a credible approach. However, he did wonder if Wally shouldn't have been on the hot seat. There should be no wondering about whether Wally is on a hot seat, just like Manning.

Still, we certainly have a better OC this year. I'm optimistic that well see a very positive difference that a healthy line, new offensive coaching staff, and a few additional playmakers has on the offense.
Any reason why you don't think we have a lot of skill position talent this year? I'm pretty optimistic going into this season, we've had our WR's hyped almost every year but at least we're bringing back Bundrage who put up the numbers to deserve it. Combine that with Bibbs and at worst average RB's and I feel good about it. I'm more concerned about someone getting them the ball.

QB is a skill position so that could be what he's referring to..
