I agree, but was Smith a proven first-team all-conference LB going into 2009, or Klein and Knott going into 2010?

I made a bold prediction after his freshman yr that he would have the all time sack record at ISU. No idea where he ended up but definitely not the top. Never was the same after Yanda knocked him back into 3rd grade.

Best DL we've had in awhile. There's some serious pass rush potential and there's the size to stop the run. Would have been a scary line with Coe and/or Irving, but it will still be good.

Too many injuries, not enough depth. I agree this line would've been really good with Coe and Irving (and also a healthy Luna and Ayeni) but I can't see them doing well with all the inexperience and lack of depth. Just imagine where we'd be without Jensen coming back and providing at least some experience. I think it's just gonna be another poor year for the d-line. Potential is there though for the ends to be good next year.

IMO, this line actually has the potential to be okay. And in looking at our past, it is probably above average over what we have had in the past.
It was just 2 years ago.

    Scott/Irving
    Laing/Jensen/Simon
    McDonough/Woods/Durbin
    Maggitt/Kron/Morrissey

Maggitt, McDonough, Laing, Simon, and Durbin were seniors. Scott had been productive as a sophomore. Irving and Morrissey were both showing potential.

Was actually a pretty solid line too from what I remember.

The subpar defense from the Cyclones gives the Hawks a chance to finally start to get their confidence rolling on offense. Both running the football and through the air.
*Breakout player prediction.... Everyone is going to have their eyes on Allen Lazard because of his hype coming out of H.S., but Derrick Willies steals the show.

McDonough had a good year that year, but going into the year he was not considered to be great, same with Laing. Jensen and Woods backing them up has far less potential than the backup of Robby Garcia, Trent and Aka IMO.

As far as Scott, he was always undersized as was Maggitt. I would definitely take Morrissey over both in a heartbeat, as well as Mitchell Meyers and Trent Taylor. And I consider today's backups better or at least as good as the backups then.

Bottom line, I would not mind a combination of Laing and McDonough over Jensen and Cousin, but actually think our backups are better today than that line. And with the DE's it is no contest. Give me our DE's from today.

Meyers started to make some plays towards the end of last year. Hope he can keep it going into Week 1.

Re: Camp Insider: Mitchell Meyers earns starting DE spot

One thing people have to remember too is that there was a period where our linebackers were so good CPR could get by playing second string guys who weren't all that great. Wally great with linebackers, but never again will we have a corp as good as Klein, George, and Knott. Because of that, the defensive line has to consistently be better in the running game then they were in 2011 and 2012.

With that said, this will probably pretty easily be Rhoads's best defensive line in terms of getting pressure on the QB.

Re: Camp Insider: Mitchell Meyers earns starting DE spot

I see people talking about this DL having depth. I hope you are right but we don't have any known quality depth at all. At DE (our strongest DL position) we have one returning starter, one sophomore who played as a backup as a freshman, than JC recruits who have never played a snap in D1. Then at DT we only have one guy with any significant experience. so we don't have any kind of quality or experienced depth at all, so lets just hope the new guys are talented and play well.

Good point. They ended that way. Maybe little Knott is the next one.

They're better off without Coe and Irving. They may have been 2 of the most talented, but they were not team guys. Addition by subtraction.

I assume we wouldn't have the Juco guys if Coe and irving were still here.

If you were talking about LB's I'd agree with you, but CPR/Wally likes to rotate the DL's a lot.
