    Re: #1 Concern

My thought is if the OL doesn't improve and we start half of our possessions with 3 & outs like all last year, then it won't matter if our defense is experienced or not. The Offense, in particular, the OL, has to step up this year, hopefully score more by a balance of running and throwing, and at the very least, keep the opposing offenses off the field longer than last year. Best Defense is a Good Offense, IMO.

Also, it's my understanding that they are going back to the old Zone Blocking scheme similar to what Bleil coached all those years, so they should be going back to what is more comfortable and familiar to them. Also, the NCAA granted more time this summer for "cerebral workouts" so the OL should have benefited from that extra time in film study to learn that offense. This will be the first time since CPR got here that the OL is learning new play calls, ie. new terminology, so in fairness to them, that will be the toughest part I think. But MM's offense is supposed to be easy to learn. Not sure what that means exactly, as I know there will be kinks to work out.

I'm not expecting the OL to be ALL World, but I am expecting, with all the experience they gained last year, to be leaders and a strength this year. I know we have some good personnel, we have to stay healthy and see if they can reach their full potential, which I honestly don't think any OL has in the CPR era. When we had Kalechi & Co, we had the talent, but lacked discipline in that group as a whole (numerous offsides, illegal procedures etc). They could have been much better based on their physical size. This group does not have a K.O. type mauler, so they will have to be better than the sum of their parts. With the coaching we have, that is possible. But possible and doing it are two different things. I am rooting for them!

As I said above, I'll be happy if we can run the ball on 1st down for 4-5 yards a pop. That would be huge for this offense to be in 2nd & 5 vs. 2nd & 12 more often than not.

I very much like to read that the ISU defense can and will blitz. We have not had the talent to do that lately.

Actually, I think we might blitz more because we have the speed to do so, and to take some heat off our young DL.

IIRC, going 3 and out on half our possessions would have been a big improvement some games.

As far as Oline play goes, and the entire offense in general, my first hope is that we can get our failures down to simply being out-talented. Since Year 1 of CPR we have had far too many negative plays that make an already tough task impossible. A big part of that was having defenders come unblocked while we have two Olinemen blocking one defender, or worse yet, an Olinemen looking for someone to block. As much as that happened through multiple classes of Olinemen suggests some serious systemic issues. Hopefully a new OC, OL coach, and WR coach will help.

As a guy who has spent the last 20 seasons in various levels of fall camps and stays in contact with coaches at all levels as well, if an OL is looking good this early, they either are on pace to win a national title, have way too simple of schemes that will get out schemed when games roll around, or have a coach that is a liar.
It takes time for OL to gel and get working as a unit. Lots of nuances and movements that are not natural

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

Or maybe they have 8 or 9 guys that started at some point in time last year, including two redshirted seniors, a redshirted junior and 2 redshirted sophomore pencilled in as starters. At some point in time these guys that have been in the program have to get better. The OL was so beat up last year, we as fan have no idea how good or bad they are, because we have not seen them hit the field at full strength. Last year ISU lost 2 starters over the summer, that is crazy bad luck.

My thought is after last year the line can to nothing but get better. IMO last years line was the worse since Todd Doxin was a Jr. The next year the line made a huge step forward. It is a amazing what good coaching can do for a group of guys.

Just for "fun", I pulled up the drive chart from one of last year's most frustrating games, Texas Tech. 18 posessions yielded 9 punts, 2 turnovers, 1 turnover on downs, 1 end of half drive. I'll grant the kickoff return was a good posession, but the offense only did something productive on 4 of its drives, two of which were pretty short fields. Amazingly, we were in this game until the end.

Thankfully someone is finally telling us how it is. All I've heard since Rhoads has been here is how this is the best line under this staff. Only for them to perform markedly worse than the previous year.
