Re: Anyone remember their college move-in experience?

The thing that will always stick out to me is the tremendous awkwardness of the first few days/nights with a new roommate. Aside from a few phone calls organizing who would bring what, I hadn't met my roommate at all. I'll always remember how strange it was once you were moved in, everybody left and you just kind of had that "well, what the hell do I do now" feeling.

Yeah, that room was right across the hall from me. On the plus side, the dude who had it didn't have to share. The downside, of course, was that there was room for a bed, a dresser, and a desk, and nothing else.

I remember within the first week, we met a guy on our floor who must have been in his 30's (although he was a foreign student) who had turned one of the Friley room closets on its side and with it's back to the door and converted it to a bar. ******* amazing! He missed a lot of classes...

Not sure, but it was around when I was a freshman in 2010. I did it in 2011, too. If you volunteered for it, they let you move in early (if you were living in university housing) for free, and you got a coupon for a free large from Jeff's Pizza. Made moving in a ton easier for everyone.

When we drop our first kid off in about 20 years, my wife and I will probably wonder around campus and campustown and not help them unpack. Maybe come back in a couple hours to say bye

All I remember is my mom trying to unpack everything for me and trying to figure out where all my **** was for the first week, my dad desperately trying to get her out of my room and get me some space to settle in, and awkwardly meeting my roommate (which pretty much set the tone for the one year I knew him).

we didn't have a fancy screen setup. i was in 1110 first year and 1106 the final two years. both on the UDCC side of the hallway on your way out the north door of Friley

Re: Anyone remember their college move-in experience?

Mine was very hot, but all in all pretty easy. I had a friend buy me a handle of vodka the day before so the second the parents were gone we got started on the evening. Had a blast the first night out and met some people I'm still friends with today. Also, I learned a valuable lesson for parties, wear something people can ask you about (cubs hat, funny t-shirt, etc.) so theres an instant conversation starter.

Re: Anyone remember their college move-in experience?

My older brother was a senior my freshman year. He stayed in Ames all summer working for the University but he came home the day before and gave me a lift into town. I remember I had 1 box of stuff with a suit case full of clothes and that was all I had. He got to infront of MWL and said, "Sorry bro, but I'm not fighting that fight. Good Luck" and I hoped out. Quickly said our goodbyes and I turn to walk in. I took 2 steps and he honked the horn, rolled down the windows and said "Some buddies and I are playing ball at the rec at 8:00. If youre interested why dont you come along and meet them." Honestly enough that is what I remembered about my freshman year move in. Not the crowdedness, not the uneasy feeling, not the fears of being in a new environment. It's looking over my shoulder and seeing my brother realize the awkwardness I was about to experience and his attempt to help me through it.

It's kind of cool to think about how much history is in that building. At one point, it was the largest dorm in the country I think.

Ya i remember them always saying it's the largest civilian dorm in the country. Our den was filled with a lot of very interesting pictures taking throughout Friley over the years.

We also randomly took down our whiteboard one day and found out that people had done the same over the past 15 years or so and wrote messages for future students. We were the firsts one to do so in the last 5 years at the time (2002-2003).

Re: Anyone remember their college move-in experience?

Not my own personal moving in story, but my wife and I helped move our daughter into Martin a few years back. She is our oldest, so Mom was having quite a bit of trouble dealing with the fact she was going to be away from home. Me, I was just grousing about how much stuff we had to put in that room.

Just before we were about to leave town, my wife and I were walking around the Martin-Eaton area feeling rather emotional. Then a pickup roared up; a guy got out of the passenger side carrying a pillow and a garbage bag of clothes, I guess; he gave a quick wave to the driver and headed into the dorm. I turned to my wife and said, "That's our son in two years." We both burst out laughing. Whoever that guy was, he pretty much saved the day for us.
