she actually did! She was the sweetest cat. When I'd come home and call her name, she'd come running from the barn for me. First thing I did every visit home. One time my mom was outside on the phone with me and Lissa was in the yard so she had me talk to her and Lissa started meowing. It was so cute.

Today's Thursday - pretty sure I moved in on Thursday. But it was on the 16th, because it was actually my parents' 20th anniversary. And they spent it completely apart! Hard to believe it's been 8 years already!

Talking to a former floor president here.

I don't think your name was Ryan, so probably not the same time. Let me think here, all of fresh and soph year, so 2006-spring 2008, and then I think fall of 2008? There was a different President that semester though.

Re: Anyone remember their college move-in experience?

Just so I feel old. Mid 70's I moved into Schmidt house on 8th floor of Knapp Tower. My dad's job took us to New Hampshire during high school, thus I had a long drive to Ames.

Had to choose between motorcycle and car. Love my Yamaha too much to let it go, so came to school with a backpack and my father's old army duffle bag with clothes on the bike. Real 'Easy Rider' kind of trip. That was my move in.

I shipped a few more boxes of stuff, but that was it.

Being in a fraternity, we would usually go out to Towers to help students move in, invite them to dinner, to play ball at the rec, etc.

I remember one year seeing a kid with his mom heading into one of the towers, arms full of stuff so I offered to help. His mom went about putting away some of his stuff in his room and I headed out to the parking lot with him - to find a 14 foot Uhaul truck full of stuff.

The best part was that he had gotten dimensions of the room ahead of time and built a custom loft for him and his roommate. Was kind of an L-shaped design so it went along the wall perpendicular to the door, then the return was supposed to stop just short of the door. As he put it together, it was quite apparent that it was going to hang out past the door frame by a good foot or so. At that point, I quietly excused myself to help someone else.

    Helser - McDonald

My only real memory of it other than the standard teary eyed mom was building my loft.

My dad's a carpenter and he looked at the lift kits and said I can do better. He had his skillsaw out in the stairwell (no mess in the room and easier to sweep than the carpet in the hall). Air compressor and nail gun in the room.

You could have parked a car on that loft.

2001, Friley 5th floor, Niles-Foster. They wouldn't let us use the elevator, so that was sweet. I didn't have much though - my room was tiny and I had to share it. I think they might have re-designated that bad boy to a single.

Re: Anyone remember their college move-in experience?

I moved into the 4th floor of Welch. I didn't have anything to big and my dad, mom and girlfriend were helping so it went pretty quick.

The only thing that really stands out is after I unloaded my car I had to move it and on the way back to the dorm from where I parked the car I got lost. I had parked the car by the Keg Shop and looking back on the fact that I got lost between there and Welch makes me laugh and feel sorry for my apparently pathetic 18 year old self.

The elevator was always broken. The one in Godfrey, at least.

Re: Anyone remember their college move-in experience?

    Larch, 2003.

I threw my **** in the back of a late 80's F150 and hauled it down myself, including the case of beer I stole from my old man and threw in a cooler. I think I had two bags of clothes, a computer, a PS2, and a guitar.

I think I was the only kid on campus who didn't have their parents in tow. I met up with a buddy who was living on the other side of campus later that night, and we killed the case of beer between the two of us in about 2 hours, and then went to a house party thrown by people from a nearby town. I got a few girls's numbers, made out with a stranger, and woke up in a dorm room that was not inhabited by anyone I knew, and I couldn't find my shirt.

Needless to say, I was hooked on college.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

Oh, yes, of course, I remember as if it were yesterday! I took the trolley to campus from the station, and then unpacked the Victrola from my steamer trunk, before throwing on my fedora and dashing off to the telegraph office to wire Mater that I had arrived, and that her whale oil lamps would be just dandy for my suite.

Re: Anyone remember their college move-in experience?

I think I did the early move in on a Thursday, 5th floor Friley, Bennett House....in fall of 1992. I was roommates with a buddy of mine from high school, so we loaded up his car and headed to campus. Drove up lincoln way and saw students everywhere....most memorable sight that day was at one of the frats they had a slip n slide setup and had girls sliding down a small hill, with a bunch of dudes pouring cheap beer over their heads. I thought that was badass, and obviously it was...

Folks came up on Saturday with more of my stuff, and we hauled up up the 5 flights of stairs. No loft or big stuff in our tiny room. Was glad to have a cd player, tv, and clean clothes mostly.....played the music loud, and met some of the people in the dorm. Was pretty fun, but nothing too exciting...
