I'd go with Mike Myers, but rather for The Love Guru. His role transcended societal and cultural barriers to create one of the most amazing characters in recent movie history.

    Of course,

That director (David O. Russell) knows how to get the most out of his actors. His past two movies have gotten a nomination in each acting category. That's basically unheard of once, let alone two movies in a row:

Silver Linings Playbook: Bradley Cooper (actor), Jennifer Lawrence (actress), Robert DeNiro (Supporting), (Jackie Weaver (supporting actress)

American Hustle: Christian Bale (actor), Amy Adams (actress), Bradley Cooper (supporting), Jennifer Lawrence (supporting actress)

I also don't get the whole Hunger Games phenomenon, it's an inferior concept/vehicle to even Twilight and Harry Potter, it's really been done before by a cult hit Japanese film, and a Steven King big budget hollywood adaptation, and then Snowpiercer comes along and presents a similar feel with drastically better creative direction and action sequences.

I just watched American Hustle this past week and I had to do a double take when I finally realized that the woman who played Christian Bale's wife might be someone I've heard of before. She looked so familiar, but I didn't quite recognize her so I had to do a search of cast a crew to find out it was Jennifer Lawrence. It was only then that I started remembering seeing her in the previews for that movie. I think you guys aren't giving her enough credit because she's a terrific actress.

If actors are supposed to get critical acclaim for branching out and playing roles different from their own personalities/looks, does someone want to explain to me why Jared Leto won an Oscar for playing transvestite?

I don't know about you guys, but I have no problem that I'm aware I'm watching Jennifer Lawrence. I'm perfectly okay with that. She's a knockout.

Bradley was pretty good in "American Hustle" but at least 4 other cast members made him look out of his league.

Oh, I didn't think about Macy getting a supporting nod. I guess it kind of makes sense in that context.

Have you seen the clip where he goes crazy on Lily Tomlin on the set of I Heart Huckabees? Pretty entertaining.

I've thought more about this, and I think Robert Duvall got snubbed by not being nominated as Best Supporting Actor for his role in Network. Ned Beatty won it from the same movie, basically for this four minute scene, but Duvall was on the screen a lot more and was just as good if not better. Here's probably the best scene of his from Network (lots of foul language, so beware):

Always thought Darth Vader was snubbed in the Star Wars franchise,. He was the pivotal character. Without Darth, the story would have been hollow. Luke Skywalker was just a minor hero.

Start around 3:00 in this, and again at 4:30 - it's genius (and probably NSFW, and purposely offensive):

Even funnier is that she later won for a Holocaust role.
