Too bad for Loth. Wish him the best.

This entire situation seems worthy of a medical redshirt.

He's already used his redshirt year. One additional year lost to a medical issue doesn't buy you a medical hardship for a 6th year of eligibility - you have to lose 2 years to injuries to have a chance to get one back.

I'm pretty sure they said career ending, not season ending. A medical redshirt wouldn't make a heck of a lot of difference if that is the case.

How is a knee injury career ending? Willis McGahee had his knee shoved backward up his *ss and tore somewhere in the neighborhood of fourty-eight ligaments and his career wasn't over. Got drafted in the first round and made multiple all pro teams in the NFL.

He is a RS Senior so he will have no eligibility left.

Because he's a senior, has used his redshirt, and will be out of eligibility.

Oh--and isn't an NFL prospect, if that's what you mean.

Jess Settles played for the better part of a decade, and Ben can't get a medical?

That's why it is called a medical redshirt. It's different than the traditional redshirt. He lost a year of eligibility due to medical reasons. These things happen. Grant Gibbs (Creighton basketball) exhausted his 4th year of eligibility but he was given 6 years to do it because of injuries he had throughout his career.

I think when your a senior and a reserve player and have to rehab a knee to the level of playing division I football again....it's just not worth it. It's just best for him to start living his life and using his degree for good. Ben will be a leader from the sideline and should e very helpful in the film room for the younger players.

Well that stinks. Thank you for the clarification.

I just feel bad for the kid. I was hoping the medical redshirt could help him out here but I was wrong.

    Re: Loth is done

I read it as he is done since he is a Senior and exhausted his redshirt.

Not arguing with you, with CPR's comments that it's "career ending", there's some reason rehab isn't worth it, but in the bylaws posted on VaTech's athletic site, I don't see that (unless it's in another section).

Guidelines for Medical Hardship Waiver Requests
For a student-athlete to receive a Medical Hardship Waiver per Bylaw 14.2.4, the following four conditions must be met:
    • The student-athlete may not have participated in more than two contests or dates of competition or 20 percent of the team's completed contests/dates of competition.
    • The injury or illness must occur prior to the completion of the first half of the season.
    • The injury or illness does not have to occur during practice/competition, but it must be incapacitating.
    • Appropriate medical documentation must exist and be provided.

I think that depends what your definition of capable is. He's capable of going out there and playing, but is he capable of playing well? There was a HUGE drop off in production last year when Farniok went down. I know that's not breaking news to anyone, but I'm just saying based upon on the field production I'm not quite sure I would consider Lalk a capable backup. Farniok's health is absolutely critical to the offense.

Really tough luck for Loth. Never like to see injuries, but it makes it even worse when it's this close to the season. Worked his butt off to be ready to contribute and he won't have that chance. Hopefully he has a strong support system, and makes the best of his life outside of football.
