Re: What is this in my yard?

If it is voles I have never seen them- do the only come out during certain times of day? In the 6 years we have lived in this house I have never seen a mouse or anything- no rodents ever. There was some dirt pushed out from under the sidewalk onto some landscaping that isn't seen in the pictures. That's why I thought it was ants- we do have plenty of them.

We had them as well. We also never saw the animal, but once we put down poison the trails went away.

Typically not. More plant eaters, but probably will from time to time. Better deal with them fast because the reproduce faster than rabbits.

My in-laws had raccoons attracted by grubs. Holy cow what a mess. Those things simply shredded the back yards digging for them.

I'm a lucky one. I have both voles AND moles in yard. I've been fighting it for 10+ years and they never go away. Every July/August their mesh of trails destroy the yard.

Every day one can chew up more yard (30 sf). They took out my half my backyard one year and I was trying to actively stop them.

Nauga den and travel tunnels. Good news/Bad news

Good: you are lucky in that there are very few of these left after all of the naugahyde furniture made in the 50's and 60's. Nat Geo will probably want to come to your house and do a documentary.

Bad: They are nasty little ********with sharp teeth. Keep your kids and pets inside.

moles are the worst. Do you have a dog at all? Our dog figured out they were fun to hunt. All the little bomb things, smelly things, noisemaker things didn't get rid of the moles. But that dog did.

Re: What is this in my yard?

I have heard that cats do a pretty good job on voles too. Maybe a neighbor cat or stray will get them. If you have an irrigation system and keep your lawn watered, the grass will fill in and you will be fine, try to get rid of them though.

Re: What is this in my yard?

I don't know about voles. But I caught several moles using a simple mouse trap and peanut butter. Had mice in my garage and a few moles as it turned out. Maybe just set a couple traps and cover them with a box or something to keep other critters out.

Moles are attracted to grubs and worms, they push up the earth to make the tunnels to eat the bugs. (Raccoon are also attracted to grubs.)

Voles eat your grass roots, as they are tunneling they are eating the grass.

That is a possible solution, but you have to find the hole where they exit, then set the trap there. Again you have to be very careful of dogs and cats, so there is some risk there. Our neighbor had some success drowning them. Find their exit hole/holes and stand there waiting. Place a hose into the tunnel and start to fill the tunnels. They will eventually have to exit. Be ready to club them with something.
