Ban social media. None of this would have happened if it wasn't for Twitter!

A University as big as Iowa State absolutely can not associate itself with anything that has repeatedly resulted in rioting. Especially when it's their students doing the rioting, and it has become part of the tradition of the particular event being discussed. You add to the fact that a kid was almost killed last year as a result of the rioting and this is what you get. If the University had reinstated VEISHEA there would have been a whole can of worms in terms of potential legal battles in the future that they would have had to worry about.

    Think about this...
    - It's obvious rioting was becoming a part of VIESHEA
    - Had VEISHEA continued and another riot occurred ISU could have absolutely been held accountable for any damages, injuries, or deaths that were the result of it because they knew in advance there was a good chance it could happen and they chose to proceed with the event anyways. There's really very little that can be done in terms of law enforcement to prevent a riot. The only fool proof way to prevent a riot is to eliminate the event.

In today's day and age, when a red flag is waving you had better take notice. That's what they did. They made a hard choice, but it was the right one.
This post is just littered with common sense. Wish I could say the same about the thread as a whole.

ISU is bigger than Leath. At some point Leath will move on, and ISU will decide Veishea will be back.

    What has he done?
While I don't blame Leath for the VEISHEA decision, because he really was in between a rock and a hard place, he overall has made some terrible decisions in past couple years. The Bubu fiasco is one thing. I've heard from countless people who work for the university that he fires valuable University employees who have been there for decades with no cause.

Seems like a guy that's on a power trip. He should takes notes from the job Geoffroy did..

Did the State Fair have twelve riots since 1985?

Someone once mentioned some riots related to the Vietnam War and the Kent State incident.
Apparently, Vietnam and VEISHEA can both cause rioting. Otherwise, never.

I didn't follow the Bubu thing enough to understand what the uproar is over it - other than he drug his feet a bit. And I think this decision was near inevitable - and believe Geoffroy's hand would've been forced to the same outcome.

I'll simply state that Geoffroy wasn't without criticism as well. First and foremost - firing Eustachy. Opinions differ on that one. I was unhappy about it, although I understood it would've been risky and a PR nightmare to retain him.

And he cancelled VEISHEA for a year as well - correct? Not a popular decision at the time. I agree with others that VEISHEA will be reincarnated in some form, and soon.

Actually, I think it shows the students that, if you break crap, you have to deal with the repercussions.

If I give my 4-year-old a toy, and she breaks it on purpose, I'm not going to go out and get her a new toy, or fancy up another toy to try and make her feel all happy inside. She broke the damn toy, now it's gone.
