I'd be perfectly content with Jarvis and Nealy returning kickoffs. It's just not worth the risk to put Wimberly out there when he's arguably the most skilled player we have on offense.

Re: Camp Insider: Will Wimberly return kicks?

Really hope that's just a motivation tactic for Nealy and West because Wimberly returning kicks is a terrible idea. He's a crucial piece of the offense and even CPR talked about how they need to do a better job keeping him healthy this year.

Re: Camp Insider: Will Wimberly return kicks?

Hmmm. Stealing a game or two this year might mean some big plays, especially on special teams (sp. teams & turnovers - great equalizers). I would hate for one of (Wimberly, Nealy, West) to get hurt during a special teams play, but the potential to house one or two could mean a game or two.

my hope is that a younger guy can step up and show they're competent at securing punts and kicks, but also make big plays. Maybe Damein Lawry? Tyler Brown? Ken Lynn? That's the best case scenario. Otherwise - gotta try to win, even if the strategy means greater risk of injuries. Unfortunately that is where this program is at.

West and Nealy can both take one to the house. Both of those guys are REALLY good. 2 of the better kick returners in recent history.

Im not sure if there is an upgrade to Wimberly. Or if there is, is it a big enough of an improvement to outweigh risk.

If we didn't have any other good options, I'd be fine with it, but he's more valuable in the backfield

Hoiberg: I have a unique situation here. I grew up here. I went to college here. My family is close and my wife's family is close. I know everyone in the community and my family is very comfortable here. My daughter has dreamed about one thing and that's going to Iowa State. The NBA is great and I love the NBA, but I love Iowa State and the opportunity I have here. We've really built something special and I think we've got real momentum to keep it going even more.

Re: Camp Insider: Will Wimberly return kicks?

I'm on on board with it IF they're confident they have other competent runners in the RB group. Wimberly is at his best getting the ball in space. As a between the tackles RB getting 20-25 carries game, it's a virtual guarantee he won't stay healthy. Returning punts and kicks maximizes his opportunities to get the ball in space and break off a big play. It's no more of an injury risk than running him into the teeth of a stacked box on offense 15-20 times a game.

Whatever, give it a shot. Might as well roll the dice on everything this year, nothing to lose.

I'm hoping Mangino realizes this and limits running Wimberly up the gut to <10 times a game, unlike what we did last year.

Love it. Get your playmakers the ball.
If we need to limit his snaps to keep him healthy, do it by sitting him on other, less meaningful snaps- ones that his skills are less suited for.

Re: Camp Insider: Will Wimberly return kicks?

Remember when they thought Bundrage returning kicks was a good idea last year? They finally pulled him after a number of poor returns and after he took a pretty good hit. If you thought the offense was bad last year imagine if Bundrage was hurt.

Re: Camp Insider: Will Wimberly return kicks?

IMO, you do what you need to do to win games. I have seen Hester from Chicago Bears win many games with his return skills. Wimberly could get hurt on any play in any situation. You can not play scared. Wimberly in space receiving kickoffs. Nealy on kickoffs as well. Jarvis West on punts. If we can steal a TD or three during the season it could make a lot of difference. Think of the quick return TD as saving wear and tear on Wimberly and Nealy duing a long 15 play drive down the field.

    Score when you can.

Re: Camp Insider: Will Wimberly return kicks?

Just thought I would put some perspective to this. Back in 1976, Earle Bruce made the decision to put WR Luther Blue back there to return kicks. Blue was ISU's best receiver by far. And Blue had been injured the previous year (not sure if it was on a KR or not). Anyway, Luther Blue's long Kickoff Return for a TD against Nebraska sparked the Cyclones to a really big electrifying win. Earle Bruce was originally criticized for his move. But Bruce responded that you put the best players out there to give you the best chance to win the game. I agree.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Wimberly already had injury issues last year.....so why not throw him in even more dangerous plays right?

Re: Camp Insider: Will Wimberly return kicks?

It is a tough call. If any team needs to score more points it is ISU, and AW is pretty dynamic in the open field. West is also pretty good at KRs, but at this point he is probably the best shifty WR on the team too. I would let him practice returning kicks and then maybe use him is certain situations, like right after the defense gives up the lead in the 4th Quarter.
