Re: Des Moines bids to host Mens NCAA tourney games

Like anything, I'm sure there are many considerations (close hotels, convenient large airports, fan support, arena facilities, location, proven success records) the committee uses in selecting a site, but I bet there are few hard-lined rules they operate by (I don't know this for a fact thought). My guess is they simply look at all their site possibilities and choose the locations which collectively fit everything they want the best. All of them are going to have pluses or minuses. I'm just hoping that Des Moines collectively has a competitive enough package to put us over the edge. My guess is that the committee and JP at least think we have a shot or they wouldn't waste their time bidding it.

Re: Des Moines bids to host Mens NCAA tourney games

I know that the NCAA has a checklist to host these types of events. If cities want to bid for these tournaments they have to go by the checklist and make sure they have everything that the NCAA wants- hotels/amenities/arena infrastructure. If the city fails at meeting the minimum requirements they can't bid. From there it is up to the NCAA to do whats best for the NCAA to line their pockets with cash!

That makes absolutely no difference. The NCAA sets up and pays for charter flights for all teams during the NCAA tournament. No team flies commercial.

I would love to see them get it at some point though.
The hotel issue is not just about having enough available rooms in the area. Each team has to have a separate hotel that includes a full service restaurant among other criteria. Omaha is in good shape for this as they have to provide for this every year for the 8 teams that come in for the College World Series.

I think they have to have conference facilities as well for team meetings.

It wouldn't matter who was playing.... I would attend each game played that weekend. What a fun time. And deserved.

It is an issue for fans. It is not easy to fly into DSM.

That's what I meant. NCAA dsoesn't want to see empty seats in opening round games. And an expensive airline ticket to a tough to get airport only encourages that. By no means is that Reason #1 (or even probably #8) but it factors in with everything else.

So if we were to get the number one overall seed the year Hilton was a host site, we could potentially have a home game?

Only if that's a #1 overall seed in the NIT.

ISU would never be able to play at Hilton in an NCAA Tournament, just like no other team is allowed to play on their home court. (Unless it is in the Final Four which is never even held on campus courts.)

Omaha, this year, let's get a good seed and own that.

Which I believe is why creighton can't be in Omaha, the only place the NCAA would want in Omaha is creighton's court.

This is a no brainer for ISU if the can co-host and still be able to play there.
