    Marijuana Question

I was just listening to the Miller/Brinson podcast and they were discussing Josh Gordon's recent marijuana suspension. Made me think, if the State of Iowa was to legalize recreational use, would that help Iowa/Iowa State recruit? Anybody know how the NCAA polices this today for Oregon and Colorado?

    Re: Marijuana Question

Ha ha. No, I don't think that would help because it wouldn't matter if it were legal in Iowa. The Buffaloes can't go puffing away either. I guess there is always the offseason.

    I can see it now...

    Re: Marijuana Question

Organizations can make their own rules on any substance. Broncos players can't use it due to terms in the NFLPA contracts and you can be sure the NCAA has rules on legal marijuana use as well.

Hmmm, probably not good for recruiting but I might come home to visit Iowa more often.

    Re: Marijuana Question

This question is the same as saying "what if congress in Iowa passed a law allowing division one athletes be paid for their services?" At the end of the day what you are allowed to do by law does not mean you are allowed to do it in any private organization, such as the NCAA.

    Re: Marijuana Question

On a personal note, I hope Iowa makes it legal.. from a recruiting/ISU standpoint, I dont think that the coach's would use that as a recruiting tool.

I'm honestly surprised we don't hear more about CU players being popped for drug tests.

I guess you don't really hear about CU sports in general.

    Re: Marijuana Question

Even though it is legal in the state for the average Joe, it is not legal for participants in the NFL, NCAA, NBA, etc.

It's no different than any private business. Even if it's legal, a business can still put it in their code of conduct as an unacceptable practice.

    Re: Marijuana Question

Aren't the recent laws passed regarding marijuana in regards to local enforcement of federal law? I believe marijuana is deemed illegal by the federal government, but in Colorado, the locals won't enforce that law.

    That's my understanding, anyway.

States have jurisdiction there (though the Feds claim to). And yes, it is still illegal on the federal level.

    Re: Marijuana Question

This is me playing devil's advocate.

If the country were to make marijuana legal, would the NCAA do it as well, or would they leave the rule alone?

So it's legal, but it's not 100% legal. They want you to smoke it in your home or other designated areas.

Pretty much. In reality, it is legal if your state says it is, but the Feds may get a stick up their butt and arrest you for it (even if the law has no constitutional basis).
