True, but you have to remember perception. Add in that WV has had more success in conference since joining than we have had and they out-recruit us and there is plenty of reason to pick them to win.

I can't explain KU other than Chatmon (espn) is associating basketball success with football.

All that said, I expect us to beat both while TT, TCU, KSU to be toss up games.

We play in a league with explosive offenses. On paper our defense appears to be in shambles. I think we will win a couple of games, but I can certainly see why someone would pick us to lose them all. With Coe and Irving with year of starting experience under them, I think this year team would have won 7-8 games. Their gone, and so may our chances of having a good year. The good news is basketball is just a few months away.

Re: ESPN's Big 12 blog picks Cyclones to go winless in league

Between the years 1996 and 2010 (when the North and South divisions still existed) Iowa State finished dead last in the North Division eight times. That's 8 times in 14 years that the Cyclones were the worst team in the worst division of the conference. In the past three years since leaving the divisional format Iowa State has been one of the bottom 3 teams in the conference.

Kansas has been the worst team 3 years in a row. That would have been the easy pick to finish last again, but it also isn't crazy to guess they crawl up a spot or two (it's bound to happen at some point). Which means another team needs to fall down a spot or two, and Iowa State's history proves they are fully capable of being that team.

Anyone who thinks the ESPN blogger's prediction is crazy seriously needs to take a look in the mirror. The expectations some of you seem to have for Mangino in year #1 are off the charts ridiculous. Blast me all you want, but it's the truth. Get a grip on reality.

Re: ESPN's Big 12 blog picks Cyclones to go winless in league

Here's my two cents...last year pre season there was a lot of hyperbole and well hype surrounding the talent of this team and CPR prob knew he went overboard with expectations, then we drop a bomb to UNI and all hell goes downhill with injuries galore and the most important position, qb, is injured. We had a defense that wasn't good but was on the field all game. Like CW points out there was a 6 game stretch where our offense was 3 and out 60% of its plays that is atrocious. Terrible o coordinator, horrible injuries, injured qb, hated oline coach, all those things are gone.

Does it mean more wins? Of course not but the attitude of this team according to players is a complete 360 and that alone can produce a lot better product on the field.

I don't think anyone is arguing the prediction of finishing in the bottom, if not bottom spot. Its predicting zero conference wins, which is an idiotic prediction if you have an ounce of understanding of the Big 12 and the pieces ISU has this year. Last year was easily in the top 5 of the worst season I can remember, and ISU still got 2 conference wins. The offense, by all predictions, will be better this year. I understand its not as easy as that, but regardless, predicting 9 conferences loses is a bad prediction.

Let me also add that I think those predicting more than 3 conference wins also falls into the category of idiotic predictions.

They went away from the tried and true prediction of KU at 0-9 and ISU at 1-8. The new blog guys are really shaking things up.

Fair enough. In the years I mentioned, ISU finished with 0 conference wins in exactly one of them (2008 I believe). So I would agree that predicting 0 conference wins this year is quite the stretch.

I would also agree that Mangino is absolutely an upgrade at the OC spot. I think for two reasons. The first being he's obviously better and more experienced at calling plays than Mess. The second being that it sounds like all the coaches agree it's best to keep CPR completely out of the offense, and apparently he's okay with that as long as Mangino is the one calling the shots. Obviously he wasn't okay with that in previous years because from what I've heard he was injecting his input far too often and it only made things worse. The real question is will CPR be able to stay out of it if things start off rough? If the QB shuffle begins after a few games then I'd say there's your answer.

This statement is a bit laughable unless you are about 20yrs old.

31, but have really only been following ISU since the McCarney years. 2003, 2006, 2008 are definitely the top 3 worst years, but last year would be the fourth. The first three years of McCarney could be in there as well, but given the situation, I don't see those years as disappointing.

Clearly you never experienced the 80's like I did...losing to Iowa by 50 nearly every year it seemed like and worse losing to Drake...Drake. No, I'll take 10 straight seasons like last years before I revert back to those days thank you.
