Becoming a Blue Blood - Article

Many posts mention how it's so difficult to recruit 5-stars vs. blue blood programs such as KU, UNC, MSU, etc. It's always nice to be reminded of how these programs became "blue bloods." As our programs continues to win and go deeper into the tournament, I can see ISU up there in blue blood land.

your blue Blood Programs goes as this:
    Kentucky
    Kansas
    Duke
    Indiana
    Florida
    Michigan State
    North Carolina

Those are my top Programs. Iowa State will never sniff the greatness those programs have seen.

For Fred it's gotta be Royce White. Even though we only made the round of 32 that year, he started the trend of transfers to ISU.

Even though we are not even close to being a blue blood right now.

I'm sorry, but what was Duke before Coach K?

Exactly. Or Florida before Donovan, which wasn't even that long ago.

I think it is interesting you picked Florida.

Florida's first-ever NCAA tournament bid was in 1987.

Prior to 2000, Florida had won the SEC a total of one time.

Florida has won two national championships in its history, both in the last 10 years.

Going by your rankings, if any school is an example of the ability to break into "blue blood" territory quickly, it is Florida.

And also, since you didn't include UCLA, I'm assuming that you don't care what happened way in the past - only what happened relatively recently. Even more ability for a new school to crack into the elite range when people think that way.

Florida and Michigan State are a NO. They are current powers no but not even close to Blue Bloods. Neither was consistently relevant in the sport before 1999. Blue Blood programs are teams that have been consistently relevant throughout the history of the sport and will never change: Kentucky, Kansas, Carolina and Duke with Indiana clinging on to the bottom of it. Some would leave them out as well.

Michigan State sits 36th on the all time win list, just behind MISSOURI and Florida isn't even in the Top 50. Iowa State starts next year just 45 wins behind Florida on the all time list. Iowa State has a wonderful opportunity to climb into that 2nd tier of teams that are current powers but there will not be any teams that ever get added to the list of Blue Bloods without rewriting the last 100+ years of history.

Never say never. In 20-30 years we may have a handful of championships and regularly reel in 5* recruits. We won't be known as a blue-blood of the 20th century but could become one during the 21st century.

That's good history, but not necessarily blue blood.

They were good from 1960-1980 as well. Not to the level they are now under Coach K but still had solid success. 4th on the all time win list doesn't just happen thanks to 33 years of Coach K although he is responsible for almost half of their all time wins. Duke won't pass Kentucky, Kansas and Carolina on the Blue Blood list but their run in the last 30 years is pretty amazing.
