Re: Column: Paul Rhoads vows to keep things old school at Iowa State

You'd think with three win seasons and recruiting classes that routinely come in near or at the bottom of the league he'd be open to try just about anything that may help. Clearly this 'old school approach' hasn't been working, maybe it's time for a touch of innovation.

I personally don't give two ***** about uniforms, but it's idiotic to deny the effect they have on young guys that are either playing or being recruited. Just look at the reactions kids have when they are presented new gear, hell, look at the reaction ISU had when they were shown the throwbacks last season. He may want to keep things 'old school', but somehow is missing the fact that 'old school' to the people it matters to includes flip phones and DVD's - it's an obvious disconnect.

Sometimes you just have to suck up your pride, realize your initial plan isn't creating the results you want and make some required changes, changes that might even go against your own personal preferences.

Re: Column: Paul Rhoads vows to keep things old school at Iowa State

For the record, those of you whole listen to our podcast know my feelings on uniforms, Twitter, etc. I am a disciple of what I call, the "Art Briles Way." Wild uniforms. Twitter. A fun brand of ball. Image and branding baby. Image and branding.

BUT, I do respect Paul's take on this. That's what I wrote the column the way that I did and also, that's why I wanted to ask Paul these questions face-to-face. If I am going to spout off about image, branding and all of that, I wanted to give him the opportunity to get his thoughts out there too.

My take on Iowa State and marketing has always been, "You might not win 9 games every year but you should still do everything you can to be cooler than everybody else." AKA, Eminem > Jock Jams. But Paul is staying true to himself and what he wants the program to be, and even though I disagree with where he is coming from, I respect everything that he had to say because he is being genuine.

At the end of the day - as I concluded the column with - if Iowa State is winning, nobody will care.

Why should a Coach decide on what songs the Band plays? Perhaps Steve smyth should tell Paul a few plays to run.

If it's a tie and the kid is undecided between two schools, but likes the cool uniforms of one school and not the old school look of the other, of course the cool uni will be the deciding factor. I also disagree with but respect CPR's opinion on this, but if he wants to be traditional and old school, then let's get back to our traditional old gold, which is the 49er gold.

Name ONE recruit who has committed to ANY College SOLELY because of the uniform. IF that was the case PENN STATE wouldn't have ANY players on their football team.

Unreal statement. So the kid decides because of the uniform and they change the uniform the next year? Really?

It's not about the actual uniform, it's about the perception. It's not that difficult to understand.

I was surprised to see that this thread already had 65+ posts.

Then I realized it was another uniform thread and I wasn't surprised anymore.

I can't imagine many things I care less about than what the team wears. It looks fine enough. Just get some wins

And I don't think anyone is saying we need to go Baylor crazy just have something that isn't so predictable.

I'm all for the sentiment that 18 year olds make dumb decisions, but this one is pushing it if you ask me. I just have a hard time believing that two school could be so close in every single regard that the uniform is the deciding factor.

After following recruiting semi-closely for the last couple years, uniform style is just about the only thing I haven't heard a recruit mention as a deciding factor.

Could we use something a little more flashy than a quarter though?

Maybe only 5% of ISU fans would think it's totally sweet, but about 99% of ISU recruits and players would think it's totally sweet. And last I checked the players actually play the game. So if flashy uniforms bring in better recruits and players, the 95% of ISU fans that would be embarrassed will have to get over it.
