We just spent the past week+ in Montana heading to Glaicer National Park. See above re: Nebraska.

If you can find the beauty in just total bareness, even eastern Montana is a nice place. I will say - for about 2 hrs between Gillette and Billings - there was NOTHING. No bldgs, no farms, maybe two runs of phone polls. It was kind of intimidating. Some nice country, and we went through at a nice time of day so beautiful landscapes and such. But nuthin' out there. Kind of worried if we had car trouble.

Re: Friday QOTW 7/18 - If you could live anywhere in the USA

As I say every time one of these threads comes up, I'd move to The Sea Ranch on the Sonoma County coast in northern California. I could not afford it now and wouldn't be able to find a job there where I would be able to get the type of house (and views) I would want. So, until Powerball comes through for me, I'll be staying here in Ames with my university job. Boooo...

the difference is NE has farm towns every 10-15 miles and buildings. WY has nothing - no buildings, no trees, etc. When you feel like you just ate taco bell and cheap beer NE is worlds better.

I've been to many places in the US but haven't found one yet that I like more there where I live now. The Denver metro has everything I want/need right now. Once I retire I will just move further west and take up residence in the mountains until the day I die.

Re: Friday QOTW 7/18 - If you could live anywhere in the USA

I've always been interested in the state of Washington, Oregon, or Northern California. Never had any inclination to move to the East Coast. Live in Texas right now and love it, but would not live in any other Southern State. Love Iowa, as I lived in Ames and Des Moines, but not sure I would go back.

    Without a job? No way!

If you are a true Cyclone Fanatic, central Iowa is the only answer, unless you can afford to travel in from Hawaii, Florida, Texas, etc. for all football and basketball games.

You're kind of right on the nothingness between Gillette and Billings, but Billings is the biggest city in Montana, complete with what we would view as suburbs. And once you hit Billings, as you drive along I-90, you hit a decent number of cities and towns (Bozeman (Montana State), Butte, Missoula) on your way to the west of Missoula, before you head north to Glacier. Did you spend any time in Kalispell/Whitefish or along Flathead Lake?

Re: Friday QOTW 7/18 - If you could live anywhere in the USA

If I was a wealthy man, I'd live in Monterey, Ca.

Instead I'm a middle class man so I'll probably stay here in the lovely burbs of Cleveland. If a transfer opportunity came up with my current employer I'd leave here for anywhere near the Colorado Rockies or the Savannah/ Charleston area. B/c better weather, mountains or ocean, yet still affordable.
