Re: Ankeny soon to be bigger than Dubuque

We bought a house on the SW side of Ankeny last year. So far so good. Love all the development taking place within a mile or two of us. It seems when the new Hy-Vee was built, the area around it went BOOM. So now instead of having to drive to the north and east side of Ankeny, everything we need will soon be within walking distance...or a quick bike ride. Plus, the aquatic center is close by for our kids to enjoy.

Now, if they'd just put a Lowes or some other home improvement store on the SW side, we'll be set.

I'm guessing that the people crapping on Ankeny haven't spent much time exploring the city. Yes there are lots of chain stores, condo's, and new construction homes. There is also other things about the town that are nice; public pools, parks, not a **** ton of traffic trying to go to Des Moines in the morning or coming home after work as opposed to the west suburbs, and not a far drive to Saylorville and Big Creek

If you don't like box stores and chains, move to Beaverdale. Tell all of your friends about how great Snookies is compared to Dairy Queen. Brag about the character of your historic bungalow. Just don't tell them that your basement leaks, you have large trees that are one storm away from falling on your 50 year old roof, that you actually do most of your shopping in the suburbs that you hate so much, and that Snookies is no different than every other ice cream place in the metro.
I'm not sure if you're ragging on Beaverdale or proving everyone's point about Ankeny?

Let me guess where you are from......

The point is that people always want to hate on success. I use to hear the same thing about WDM.

I think people are all confusing what is considered success in the city management. Some say growth, some say attractions, some say convenience, etc. etc. .....

If you didn't live in ankeny (let's say WDM), is there anything in ankeny that would be worth visiting/driving up for?

I think it is hard to separate growth from success. People are providing feedback on the successes of the city via their real estate dollars. If you are doing things right, people moving into the area are going to consider your community. If you aren't, then not so much. The result will be growth or loss of population. If Ankeny was doing a crappy job and wasn't offering a desirable product to prospective residents, it wouldn't be growing like it is.

I live in WDM. There isn't anywhere I visit in Ankeny but I would like to live there because I commute to Ames.

I live in Ankeny and think it's a great community, but I can honestly say there's nothing in Ankeny worth visiting if you live in, say, West Des Moines or Waukee. Unless of course you're tired of MILF watching at the local Target on a Saturday and want to try it elsewhere.

I also lived in West Des Moines for 10 years prior to moving to Ankeny and can honestly say there's nothing there worth driving for outside of Jordan Creek Town Center.

The only reason I've went to Ankeny in the last couple of years has been to check out FleetFarm and to also check out the craft beer selection of the new Hy-Vee. Although it's the same for other suburbs.

    Altoona-Prairie Meadows
    Grimes-Stevie C's bar
    Waukee-Nothing
West Des Moines-Too many places to list
    Urbandale-Too many places to list
Clive-Never know whether I'm in clive, WDM, or Urbandale
    Pleasant Hill-Nothing
    Windsor Heights-Refuse to go
    Bondurant-Nothing

There is nothing wrong with the suburbs that I haven't visited, just nothing that peaks my interest.

I drove through Big Creek on Friday afternoon. Underutilized. Saw four boats and 15 cars. Lots of 837 acre lake available.
