Yes, to a small number of older alums, that is still what VEISHEA means. To those aged 15-35 or so, and to most Iowans (thanks to the media), VEISHEA is a huge drunkfest full of parties and riots.

And are you really ignorant to think that it's only a few knuckleheads causing it, or that it only happened in 2004 and last year? It's happened a LOT more than that. I was at ISU from 1987 to 1991 and there were at least two major riots in just my four years there.

And it's more than just a few knuckleheads. I agree that it might start off with just a few handfuls of idiots, but then thousands of other idiots join in the mess instead of trying to put a stop to it.

As I've said numerous times, I wish this wasn't the case, but it is. Ask nearly anyone on the street what they think about VEISHEA and the first word that will come out is "riot". It's partly true, but mostly a media creation as well. The media never covers all the great things that happen during VEISHEA, only the riots. So that's the stigma.

So much so in fact, that now incoming freshmen feel the need to party and riot during VEISHEA. That's what it has become famous for, and what sadly is expected.
Thousands joining in? More like hundreds watching but only a few out of control drunks breaking the law. How many arrests were made this year? In fact how many arrests have been made in the last decade or the history of Veishea? Yes the media sensationalizes the out of control drunks, but they also do news segments on the good events going on at Veishea every year. All I've read from some of you on here is that it's a riot filled drunkfest that needs to be ended. I haven't even heard many if any in the media calling for it to end. But you emphasize what you want about Veishea and I'll emphasize what I want. You're not going to convince me that more can't be done to stop these mini-riots before they get going if the University works with law enforcement and the city to find solutions. And you're not going to convince me that giving up and letting some out of control drunks end this great ISU tradition is the right thing to do.

If you are there watching, you are adding to the mob mentality. 2 or 3 guys usually don't tip over a cop car and knock over light polls unless they feel safe in the mob.

Agree and no doubt a mob can form and egg on the crazies. Point is to find solutions to prevent mobs from forming in the first place. Also have people monitoring big parties that can notify authorities when things are starting to get out of control, and have an adequate force there immediately to handle the situation if and when it does. Maybe security became complacent the last few years since there were no mini-riots since 04 (at least not big enough to be a big news event).

Where did I say it was Veisheas fault? I'm just saying IDC about veishea. It was kind of a dumb event.

You vaguely implied it, and that's rather pathetic you think it's dumb. I loved it all during my time at isu, and partook in both the drinking as well as the true VEISHEA. It was one of the best weeks during the year.

Oofta, I use to bartend out there 1-3 times a week in college for some extra hours. Regretted and never looked forward to it.
